@Wolf_Eisberg @xhbtfku @Pirat_Nation Yeah because they have systematically degraded physical releases of the course of 20 years, alot of games arnt even complete on disc anymore. How many games sold more than 100k digitally? Without that info the previous info literally worthless

@xhbtfku @Pirat_Nation So far in 2026 only 7 PS games sold surpassed 100k physical copies. When physical copies exist only a small % if total sales were from physical. Consumers are choosing digital over physical in large part.

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek says there’s no conspiracy behind PlayStation’s move away from physical games. In his view, the industry is simply following what most players have already chosen: buying games digitally. Faliszek argued that consumers ultimately decide how companies operate. “You, the consumer, have made your choice, and the choice is for digital.” He also pointed out that while many people online are upset about Sony ending physical, sales data has shown for years that digital purchases have massively overtaken physical copies. @Pirat_Nation I WOULD have bought Crimson Desert but the disc still requires a download to play! Sony/Publishers: "Lets release a physical version that isn't complete, not even playable. Then when it sells poorly we can say nobody wants physical anymore"

Only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the US so far this year, according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. The figures were shared during the ongoing debate over Sony’s decision to stop producing first-party physical PlayStation games in 2028. While many gamers say they want physical games to stay, the data shows that most people are still choosing to buy their games digitally. Recent estimates from Alinea Analytics paint a similar picture: -EA Sports FC 26: 12% physical sales -Resident Evil Requiem: 27.8% -007 First Light: 21% -Crimson Desert: 19.9% -Ghost of Yotei: 35.4%, the highest among this year’s biggest PlayStation releases

@Bloodsugarzx @TheNCSmaster Crimson Desert had like, 6 million copies sold in the first months overall right? One would think the physical edition would be selling close to a million or something idk...

Exactly, speed is not an excuse. I wish nintendo wouldn't have even tried to make switch 2 carts with faster transfer sleeps if it meant making the carts way more expensive. Just keep the old switch 1 carts, boost the capacity to 64 or even 128 and keep the price lower just require installs. ( or at least give that as an option to publishers)

@JC25Esqueda @Lionsta1117399 @Genki_JPN Valid, but they could definitely figure out how to install from the cart. Consoles have been doing this for three generations. It’s just a money play.

I dont want to have something I own long term tied to a condition of a 3rd party. If you have a high time preference of a year or two there likely wont be a problem in that time. I regularly play games I bought 30+ years ago. Those wouldn't work with as a GKC. They could put the data on the card and make it installable to the sd/nvme with a software update to alleviate that issue. Publishers are just trying to cheap out by changing the definition of "buying" something to what is closer to a lease

@tiny_violet @AnthonyHaulter @Genki_JPN you can’t wait few minutes at start of the game (just like on every playstation xbox or pc)? how it’s big difference especially when you will have almost twice faster loading times with GKC

To follow up the other comment, which is correct GKC can be traded, borrowed or sold. But you dont own a copy of the data when you buy it. (I e. The data isn't on the cartridge). So you are at the will of the publisher and the storefront to agree that you still have the right to re-download or access the game at any point in the future.

@FrostedYukio @harlequinyosei @Genki_JPN Okay so make it so the game is still full on cart and needs to install to the sd or internal drive. Gamers want to own an autonomous copy of the game they purchase.

@harlequinyosei @Genki_JPN game + DLC (which this is) is $80 everywhere else they likely needed the faster transfer speeds of the internal storage and SD Express

I get it—you're not wrong. A single turd is better than eating two. But let's be honest: we should just stop eating shit altogether. Game key cards might feel like a compromise, but they're really just another step toward a fully digital future. Yes, they borrow some traits from physical products, but they don't give you true ownership—an autonomous copy of the game data that you control. Accepting them as a stand-in for real physical media is surrender with extra steps. It's still just a physical token tied to a revocable digital license that can disappear at any time. Sometimes "good" is the enemy of great. In this case, it's more like settling for "less bad" and calling it victory. This is the boiling frog mentality in action—slowly accepting worse and worse terms until the original principle is gone. We shouldn't normalize it.

@BandaiNamcoUS @fromsoftware_pr @NintendoAmerica @Sony @RockstarGames Fromsoft, BandaiNamco, Nintendo - With all the outrage from Sony and GTA6 you have the easiest opportunity to make headlines in a good way. "Elden Ring for NSW2 reverses from key card to full on cart release". Extra sales would make up for the manufacturing cost in this climate, look at oblivion remasters reception and preorders.

Very few games couldn’t be compressed to fit on a 64GB cartridge with proper optimization and DLSS. The real problem is that publishers now have an easy out: skip optimization entirely and just ship a cheap Game-Key Card instead. What Nintendo should have done — and could still do with a simple software update — is offer cheaper cartridges that continue using the older, original Switch technology instead of jumping straight to these expensive new high-speed express memory chips. And before anyone brings up transfer speeds, just require the game to install to the console’s internal NVMe/SD storage. Is it as good as reading from a Cart no, is it better than a GKC, Yes... That’s a compromise most consumers and physical collectors would have been more willing to accept since it doesn’t leave you dependent on internet access or server handshakes.
