best documentary I ever watched was about some Ukrainian red army soldiers who were going through an ideology crisis during the winter of 1991 when the Soviet Union was collapsing

Fallout 4 doesn't click with me because, beyond the issues i have like the voiced protagonist, you're also forced into the role of that parent who survived the great war. You're not playing your own character, just a gradient of the one Bethesda made for you

For me, Skyrim is very agnostic to your characters identity. There are very few moral judgements you're forced to make, it doesn't force you into a particular backstory except "you crossed the border at the wrong time", so its quite easy to larp as whatever you can think.

Skyrim is an incredibly flawed game but there’s just a real magic to it that so many have tried and failed to capture since that you can’t not consider it one of the greatest games of it era

Looking at images of the Afghanistan war and I can't help but shake the image of that every US soldier wants to leave ASAP meanwhile every British soldier looks like he's resisting the urge to pull a Rory Stewart and wear a pakol and robe

@alon_mizrahi Solimani's strategic genuis got him beheaded like a character in Metal Gear: Revengeance because he spent his career exacerbating the insurgency in Iraq just to kill Americans

@Anthrax_InAus These are notoriously unreliable, there are studies on the subject. High variance in accuracy, especially in false positives.

@TheMindScourge how do you reconcile this with the Soviet model of the early Cold War where military production was first and foremost while civilian amenities were second?

The “US manufacturing renaissance” guys are too over-aligned on military production. It’s ultimately a small market. If you want to be a major manufacturing power - which, to be clear, the US is - you need to be thinking about production for the civilian sector. Military potential is a derivation of the civilian economy There’s a reason why the most important US military innovation in recent years - Starlink - came out of the civilian market, and not the other way around

@Sahar_A_Writes when we say the "Ukraine War", the average person doesn't think Ukraine is the aggressor, but that the conflict is taking place in Ukraine

"The current global energy crisis — caused by the Iran war." As if facts are optional, Sarah Ferguson frames Iran as the aggressor in what is demonstrably the US and Israel's war. A flagrant misrepresentation. And the ABC wonders why it alienates Australians. #abc730 #auspol

@DavidPocock I appreciate the concern put into fuel stocks, but don't you also think having submarines that operate independently from international fuel markets would be a net positive for both our fuel and physical security?

Major parties happy to spend hundreds of billions on submarines they hope we'll get in the 2030s and 40s for national security reasons, but we haven't seen the same investments into fuel security. So 🇦🇺 is exposed to global price shocks when there’s conflict overseas. Investing more in electrification would cut costs and strengthen our resilience, but it has to be done in a way that benefits every household. abc.net.au/news/2026-03-2…

Hell, I partially voted for Labor cus they were pointing this out, and it was part of their policy platform to correct it, but then, as it usually goes, there's always more "important" shit to do

Its ludicrous that after decades of credible people pointing out our fuel stockpiling issues, it remained unaddressed. Completely typical of our political class that lets themselves be surprised by events occurring around them.

Gonna be honest, we should be rationing fuel for public transport , essential services, and so on if the current war in the ME looks to have no sign of slowing
