First, there is a big difference between natural kratom and synthetic 7OH or other synthetically derived substances like MGM. As for “modern evidence” one might argue that peer reviewed studies like this one should be taken into account. The Thai government banned kratom because it was cutting into their own drug money and because they knew that their citizens were using the much safer, natural alternative of kratom which does not interact with the same opioid receptors that affect the respiratory system in the same way. I’m not saying that someone might not have an adverse reaction to kratom or someone might not severely abuse it and overdo it but the reality is that this plant has helped millions of people get off of hard drugs and I personally know people who would almost definitely not be alive today and would have overdosed from actual opiates had they not found kratom. I know people who were severe alcoholics and whose lives were a constant battle that now have just a few cups of Kratom at a bar with friends per day and aren’t getting impaired or causing damage in their households. Your “modern science” isn’t nearly as clear as you think and recently there are even studies done by the FDA themselves which show way less danger and potential for abuse than everyone is claiming. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41486478/

The “kratom has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia with no deaths” argument is a myth. Traditional use involved chewing fresh leaves in small, intermittent amounts with no modern toxicology, no coroner systems, and no way to identify alkaloid-related deaths. Today’s kratom is industrialized, dried, powdered, and consumed in massive doses that never existed historically. Southeast Asian governments didn’t consider kratom harmless — Thailand banned it in 1943 and neighboring countries restricted it due to dependence and toxicity. With modern forensic tools, we now have autopsies showing mitragynine alone causing opioid-type respiratory depression and pulmonary edema. Folklore doesn’t override pharmacology, and history doesn’t cancel modern deaths.
