we need to look not at the top of this figure, but the bottom of it - conditional NDCs and all net zero pledges. Are we going to meet net zero? Maybe! So long as we ignore the naysayers trying to block renewables, grid upgrades, nuclear, EVs etc. Warming then is 1.9C not 3.1C.

It's completely understandable that the Emissions Gap media headlines focus on the bad news: if current policies continue we're looking at a catastrophic 3.1C warming. That means curtains for rainforests, coral, ice caps, unliveable conditions in tropics, superstorms etc. But...

@NateSilver538 Only true in nominal terms, when one adjusts to purchasing power the difference is far less dramatic. And importantly in “real” terms, the UK is richer now than they were in 2007.

In 2007, the UK had higher GDP per capita ($50K) than the US ($48K). Now (2022) ours is $76K and theirs is $46K! (Source: World Bank) Their economy has actually shrunk on a per-head basis. And stuff like this is going to make the gap bigger: marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolu…

Today's numbers. Forecast seems to be stabilizing a bit, with Harris up ~2 nationally and ~0-1 points in most pivotal swing states. natesilver.net/p/nate-silver-…

@Lobster243724 @EuropeElects Yeah it's anyone with Italian citizenship, which is a large number. I also don't know if you even need to register to vote to be counted on this electorate figure. For other countries you might not be able to vote from abroad.

New chart📈: This is probably true in many countries: People with average income cannot buy a home in the capital. Its just gotten too expensive. In Norway, 97% of homes for sale in Oslo are out of reach for a person with average income. #dataviz

Some bad things about Switzerland: low tax rates and high salaries act as a brain drain on surrounding countries (hi). This is how a poor country has become a very rich one in less than a hundred years.

My family finally became Swiss citizens after a 4-year application process. Photo shows information for our first referendum vote. Since I cannot be refused citizenship now, it is time to say what I *really* think of this country. Thread.

As an effect of austerity and its long crisis, Greece has become the second poorest country in the EU measured in GDP per capita. Is this what a "success story" of adjustment looks like?

@andreamatranga Amazing!! I’ve been fascinated by this paper since you first told me about it, over ten years ago! I’ve been teaching it just last semester at a course led by Mehdi Senouci at Centrale.
