Fat People: Raise your hand if you've been told to "eat less and exercise more" by a healthcare provider who hadn't bothered to ask what you eat, or how much you exercise. Even if dieting did work (and it doesn't) practicing stereotypes instead of medicine would still be wrong.

So I found out how much the NCMP costs LAs + NHS digital. I also went down a deep, dark rabbit hole looking at the evidence that the NCMP is harmless, as the govt assert. Turns out those claims are misleading - who'd have thought? laurathomas.substack.com/p/heres-why-yo…
Laura Thomas, Ph.D. RNutr@laurathomasphd

Any colleagues in public health/nutrition/body image research know what the average spend on the NCMP is in England? I can see it comes out of the Public Health grant for LAs (~£3billion), but can't see further breakdown of how it's spent.

@furfuzfabunker @melciavucco Intentional weight loss might work in the short term but people usually regain the weight after 5 years. It's a well known study. That's why weightloss is not sustainable in the long term and that's why the weightloss industry is such a profitable business.

Intentional weight loss rarely works, and even if it did it, it's not the solution to body image problems or low self-esteem.

Calling fat people an “epidemic” isn't accurate or helpful. Nor are movies/TV creating entire worlds without a single fat person. Fat people see ourselves represented either extremely negatively, or not at all. It's toxic. Fat people deserve positive representation!

Could people please stop peddling "calories in/calories out" diets for weight loss as if we haven't known for decades they don't work - unless, of course, you're hoping for short-term weight loss followed by weight regain and harm from weight cycling? Thanks.

If you’re hesitant to give up the word ob*se because it’s a medical term, please remember that up until 1987 homosexuality was included in the DSM as a psychiatric diagnosis. The medical establishment doesn’t always get it right.
