Gustavo was a friend to many. He inspired many. That alone is a testament to how fully he tried to live his life. But he wasn’t infallible… no human being ever is. The fact that he may have hurt someone enough for them to feel anger or even celebrate his death does not erase the good he did. And the good he did for many does not erase the pain he may have caused someone else. Both of these things can be true at the same time. Perhaps instead of deepening this vicious cycle of hurt, we can acknowledge that human beings are complicated. None of us leaves this world having done only good or only harm. No one gets out of here alive. Death is not a punishment for the dead. Sometimes it brings relief, sometimes it brings unbearable grief, and often it brings both at once….That’s life. And while we’re still here, maybe the real work is figuring out how to live with each other in a little more honesty, accountability, and grace.

Politicians and the state humiliate elders and experts because they have no knowledge, and no work. Imagine dreaming your whole life to be president and then you get in, and you have nothing to show for it. You've never come up with an idea. You've never taught people who went on to become useful members of society. You've never built institutions. You have never made anything. All you've done is use money to pay people to do the work. Nobody can say "S/he did this, and here is the legacy in other lives." The only thing left to do with a life like that is to parasite on those who work. Teach your children to make stuff. Make ideas, make things, help people, so that they don't bring curses on themselves by treating elders like this. #MaishaKazini
