Just found out that a student I taught last year passed his language resit. Which means every student I’ve taken through GCSE has a GCSE pass at least in English. I could not be prouder #whatitsallabout

Ofsted visited 50 schools. Found a gap between decoding accuracy and reading fluency. 25%+ of pupils enter secondary below expected reading standards. Despite having had secure phonics knowledge. This isn't a decoding problem. It's a fluency problem.

How to assess reading fluency in 2 minutes: 1. Child reads passage aloud 2. You mark errors for 60 seconds 3. Total words minus errors = WCPM That's it. One afternoon for a whole class. No transcription. No 15-minute running records. readingfluency.co.uk/blog/how-to-as…

***MARGINAL GAINS*** I’m super proud of the team at Longdendale. Attendance is a team effort. However, improving attendance is hard work and takes time. It requires a relentless drive from everyone, 3-4 weeks to improve our overall YTD whole school attendance by +0.1%. This is the reality. Our approach has included: New attendance system ✅ 1% better club ✅ Legacy points boost ✅ Legacy levelling up challenge ✅ Relationships ✅ Building a sense of belonging for all ✅ Working as a team step by step. #TheLongdendaleLegacy

#TeamEnglish put these together post mocks so students could look at the Macbeth question they did - tick off what scenes they DID write about and then red pen the parts they omitted … other uses no doubt dropbox.com/scl/fo/9cnsapg…

Ofsted: "Teachers over-use reading comprehension questions. This does not build pupils' reading fluency." So what does build it? Repeated reading. Prosody modelling. Daily practice. Not comprehension worksheets. readingfluency.co.uk/blog/comprehen…

It's heartbreaking when a student invests time & effort into independent revision, but it doesn't pay off! A lot of revision fails because it feels productive: rereading, highlighting, & copying notes. But familiarity is not evidence of learning. Responsive Revision is built on a simple principle: Generate evidence. Diagnose gaps. Close them through targeted retrieval practice. Retrieve. 🧠 Diagnose.❓ Act. 📝 Repeat. 🔁
