Of course we need them. Apostrophes convey meaning, they are not just random decoration. Support the Apostrophe Protection Society!
‘Yorkshire apostrophe’ row raises bigger question: do we even need them? theguardian.com/uk-news/articl…

The possessive apostrophe? It's not that hard if you know the history. grammar-monster.com/punctuation/us…

Now here is a campaign worth joining - while remaining safe from brutal attacks on your morals, politics or identity... apostrophe.org.uk

@BBCNews It's debatable whether the apostophes should be there in the first place because the Walk certainly doesn't belong to St Mary. Presumably it's named after a nearby church, but that will also not belong to St Mary, rather it is dedicated to her and formally the Church of St Mary.

@BBCNews The Apostrophe Protection Society believes this is totally unacceptable. Apostrophes in street signs often reflect local history and their removal is a form of cultural vandalism. The APS will be investigating further.

I've seen this type of mistake too often recently! Whether it's "Mens" or "Womens" or "Childrens", they're all equally wrong. "Men" is already a plural noun, it's just non-standard and doesn't end in "s". They could put "Socks for Men", or "Men's Socks", but never "Mens Socks"!
Apostrophe Rage@apostrophe_rage
Hey @Tesco as it is Father’s Day, why isn’t it Men’s Socks?

Whilst my preference for the possessive of a name ending in “s” is to add an apostrophe and “s”, the alternative of just adding the apostrophe is also correct. Here’s a great example from the London Underground:
Grammar Monster@grammarmonster
St. James's or St. James' underground station in London has both of these signs (one at each entrance). It's not a great example of consistency, but it makes the point that both versions are acceptable. 😃
