@IrvingSwisher Not recapping households destroyed what was left of the working class of America
those toxic assets were homes people were living in so really that’s a terrible tradeoff
But the goal of 08 was to punish poor people for pursuing housing in what way the govt said was legal…
English

Credit to Sec. Paulson for pivoting away from his original idea (buying up toxic assets) and focusing on recapitalization of the banking industry (through a form of partial bank nationalization) at the prompting of Chris Dodd and Barney Frank.
Came w/ more upside for taxpayer
Bob Elliott@BobEUnlimited
Few appreciate just how important Barney Frank was to saving the financial system in the GFC. His purposeful drafting allowing the purchase of any "financial instrument" allowed TARP to directly recapitalize the banks, which magnified the impact 20x vs. buying assets directly.
English

@GlennLuk @matthewswspence @vshih2 I’m usually sympathetic but that sounds like a crazy copout of an argument. 83 million vs 1.4 billion if even at an equal human capital development the latter will win with scale alone. So what? Germany is to somehow develop human capital at >14x efficiency? Seems doomed
English

@matthewswspence @vshih2 Human capital related to manufacturing. Evidence is that it is losing global market share in a wide swathe of manufacturing good categories. That is a sign comparative advantage is diminishing.

@ThatoneQueen3 @Child_ofOlive Chalk it up to Mel’s Poetic license but also being the wealthiest individual doesn’t mean you had to be richer than an entire clan.
Agree they did the literal opposite in the endbut the throwaway line in episode 1 did show in a way that they knew they were fking something up lol
English

@AppleTafaha @Child_ofOlive Then why is Mel richer than Camille herself? It was a collaboration but Mel got more out of it. Currently, Hextech wouldn’t exist without a Noxus champ and that makes them about as important to Piltover as they are to Ionia.
English

@ThatoneQueen3 It also made the overall world less dynamic by making Piltover “side” w/ Noxus in S2. In geopolitical contexts Old Piltover was resisting and actively helping other countries resist Noxian imperialism whereas Zaunites were more often assisting Noxus (due to desperation but still)
English

@ThatoneQueen3 @Child_ofOlive Technically it didn’t have to be but they certainly didn’t.
There was that throwaway line in S1 about how Mel’s wealth comes entirely from Clan Ferros i.e. Camille’s which might have in a better world set some kind of rug pull later but i guess the Noxus wanking was too alluring
English

@Child_ofOlive The poorest Medarda is the richest Piltovan and Hextech could not exist without her intervention.
English

@policytensor @dbessner @AmPrestigePod On #1 “have to” vs “will they” can be different things. Have to implies Iran can restrict their access to oil after transit is normalized w/o disrupting that gross transit. Will they can mean just path of least resistance. Why put effort into alternatives when the toll is cheap
English

@jbarro It’s not overtime it’s a self penalty to the MTA for not hiring enough people (bc healthcare and pension costs) to run trains with different operating requirements because it can result in accidents/mistakes
MTA considers it cheaper to just pay the penalty than hire more people

English

This is a key thing about "overtime" pay for LIRR workers: sometimes, "overtime" doesn't even mean they worked extra hours
Nicole@nicolegelinas
Directly publicly subsidized unions shouldn’t be able to hold us hostage with unreasonable demands. The governor is brave and should continue to be brave. city-journal.org/article/long-i…
English

@ZaidJilani They both have their unique axes to grind against what they see as the "dominant national mythology" that is keeping the sheep servile & think that if they control how history is taught that this will create good patriots/activists for their own preferred version of ethnogenesis.
English

@Tcho76521726 @atlanticesque @rakishanis Forcing the American worker to bear the brunt of all inflation shocks while corporate profits were the highest in 40 years is not “pursuing a policy of full employment” except in name only. It’s certainly not evidence of any kind of modus vivendi between labor-capital-govt.
English

@AppleTafaha @atlanticesque @rakishanis Full employment was an explicit policy goal of the Biden admin and the American people fucking hated it.
English

@atlanticesque @rakishanis And it’s been an abject failure on basically every level so this really doesn’t say anything. The state doesn’t mediate labor it consistently sides with capital and petite aristocrats
If it did ever care about labor, full employment wouldn’t just be a vacuous talking point
English

@rakishanis There’s pros and cons, but America has decisively chosen regulation as the preferred means of mediating labor-capital-state relations, and so unions just get in the way.
English

@goddess_ymir @ThatoneQueen3 I don’t see how. Not in any way vsv her as an individual. The only compromising is political (e.g. just the fact that Garen is not *currently* Noxian), not values based.
The kat comic went out of its way to make her worldview as malleable and uncommitted as possible.
English

@AppleTafaha @ThatoneQueen3 Katarina compromises herself just as much as him by engaging in a secret relationship with him tho.
English

People are blaming Katagaren for this but it’s not the fault of that pairing. It’s because people just can’t handle female characters who stand ten toes down on bad things they do.
The peoples princess@ThatoneQueen3
Having her turn against Noxus would be the worst possible decision for her character and I like that she likes her evil region.
English

@goddess_ymir @ThatoneQueen3 Whatever theoretical ending is less of an issue rn than the current writing and its inequity between the two of them. It would really suck if the basis of the relationship as it current sits is just Garen compromising himself for Kat who isn’t likewise meaningfully doing so
English

@AppleTafaha @ThatoneQueen3 The ppl who just wants them to have a happy ending need to get that the main appeal of their dynamic lies in the fact that they're doomed from the start. Their love will lead them to be faced with nothing but angst, consequences, and inevitable heartbreak.
English

@ThatoneQueen3 @goddess_ymir Eh. A lot of things can make someone unhappy compounding over time or even things happen that force him to leave for lots of reasons unrelated to magism.
English

@AppleTafaha @goddess_ymir If Garen ever does betray Demacia in future canon and there aren’t retcons to the mage rebellion, people are gonna ask why he didn’t do it sooner
English

@goddess_ymir @ThatoneQueen3 People also just ignoring that both can just betray their nations together and just leave. Obv that’d be so far down the line as to be meaningless rn but I see plenty of people saying Garen needs to betray demacia so kat isn’t like being singled out imo wrt Noxus.
English

@AppleTafaha @ThatoneQueen3 Yeah I remember the Institute of War days. But I think the way Riot has setup the relations between Noxus & Demacia in the current lore just leaves no place for them to have a happy ending without betraying their nations.
English

@goddess_ymir @ThatoneQueen3 Eh. There’s a big gradient most people ignore. Kat in the old old lore worked against certain elements of Noxus and even worked with Demacia without any kind of defection. Any defection would be so far down the line of plot so as to be meaningless in the present.
English

@ThatoneQueen3 But I do think he plays a role in this idea that Kat should be redeemed. When I was arguing about Kat’s morality, ppl would use Garen loving her as proof she can’t be "evil" & if Riot ever gave her a defection arc, Demacia would be the easiest region to justify due to their link.
English

@ThatoneQueen3 Longform romantic development? definitely lacks. Usually they try to put effort in what is the appeal of a couple, though, with a notable exception being katxgaren. A kat that is just unrepentant evil can’t be in a romantic dynamic w/ Garen or most of her ships so ppl just don’t
English

@AppleTafaha League tends not to invest as much times into their love stories specifically and when they do it’s a hit or miss
English

Having her turn against Noxus would be the worst possible decision for her character and I like that she likes her evil region.
Goddess_Ymir@goddess_ymir
Unpopular opinions on Katarina Du Couteau?
English

@ThatoneQueen3 she softened in a way that doesn’t do much for katxgaren. She spared lux for being “strong” but unless the entire relationship is just going to be about lux it doesn’t really give much vsv a relationship with Garen. Still a dead end for meaty drama.
English

@AppleTafaha Katarina ALREADY was softened by her comic. In some ways Garen was too but the champs still kept their basic identities. League isn’t a romance. The majority of love stories and situationships have not been developed and likely never will.
English

@ThatoneQueen3 It being doomed doesn’t change much. The concept is kind of dead if kat remains static bc Garen has to compromise himself to be interested in Kat but Kat doesn’t likewise. You can’t do much with a story like that so people default to the built in story of Kat softening some % amt
English

@AppleTafaha I’m fairly sure Katagaren is going to be doomed. I don’t think they’ll ended up together in the end. Not even TB did.
English

@wuyanglover @Heralya1 Ah yes Demacian patriarchy like. Um. The female supreme military commander and their multiple female led noble houses.
I think you are confusing equal primogeniture for patriarchy. And even if you want to call that patriarchal you’d also have to consider Noxus that as well
English

@Heralya1 I was gonna say it’s literally demacia.. but knowing the average arcane fan they are probably just gonna respond with “who is that?”
English
