Snowy Owl's began hatching this week in our study area; small mammal abundance is typically associated with presence of breeding owls.

Multi-tasking - preening whilst incubating.

Looks to be an early season; several territories already have clutches of 3 or 4 eggs. If this pattern holds = about 1 week ahead of normal

@JCtheShoeThief Not sure of the mechanism, but yes, 2 females laying in the same scrape (i.e., nest). Probably 2nd a clutch of 3 laid over 1st clutch of 3.

@JCtheShoeThief You're likely referring to the "whitish" egg as different - that egg is likely sun-bleached...it is a peregrine egg. Right track though.

That makes sense for sure, but even in years when prey abundance is high clutches of 5 are rare, and 6 is extremely rare (I've never seen).

Normal clutch size for peregrine falcons is 3 or 4 eggs - any ideas what occurred in this clutch from 2016?

Once in hand, we use a falconry hood & aba to avoid stress, injury & protect feathers. The aba exposes feet & body to prevent over-heating.

We mark our birds with blue alphanumeric bands which allows us to identify individuals without recapture; this male is 01 over H.

Mild weather this spring in Rankin Inlet, NU. Rain, slushy snow, spring freshet and flooded the sea-ice. A cold snap would change that fast.

@MMMukalla The fox was left alone on the nest ledge for a few minutes, no harm to any of the eggs...total surprise for me...so I'd say, the falcon won.
