I argued against the changes to the searches language on page 40 tonight. I believe notice to parents to be a priority that the district must consider, but was out voted 3-2. Thank you to Mr. Shelton for voting with me. The new language gives broader and more implicit timing for a notification which I'm told should remain the same day as a search, but that is entirely unenforceable now because any time could be argued as "as soon as possible". We've seen plenty of government agents utilize broad language and loopholes for their own advantage over public interest, so it's not unreasonable to suspect this might happen here.

Issue #2: Searches. Any student search must clear the 4th Amendment's "reasonable suspicion" bar (New Jersey v. T.L.O.). Arizona already lost here: Safford USD v. Redding, where SCOTUS struck down a school strip-search of a 13-year-old. This protection can't be watered down.
