@jadel4w Would a small dedicated community be deterred by concurrent player numbers, Jade? I really don't understand what actual harm public player numbers are supposed to do. You speculate that it could deter people from trying genuinely worthwhile games, but do you have a real example?

Because player count has nothing to do with quality and a lot of games used to be able to engage with smaller starting communities to encourage growth over time. Now games are more likely to be abandoned because people see the low figures and assume it’s not worth trying. A small dedicated community has saved games like warframe.

@kyomu_utsuro That just leads me to wonder, how big of a splash is big enough? I think you're right when you say too few people put their energy into the actual solutions. If 90%+ of players is content with censorship, then are we doomed to always get censorship? There's that hopelessness.

@kyomu_utsuro I think Code Vein 2 is the clearest example in recent memory. 1000+ negative reviews; many reactions on social media; refunds. Problem is, the game's performance is also bad, which probably plays a part in the negative reaction. It's tricky to prove where the lines are.

@kyomu_utsuro I think you're right, but I feel like the organized actions available to us are pretty limited. Negative reviews; sales boycotts; messaging companies' social media or customer support. I've seen people do this in a pretty organized manner, and get completely ignored.

Generally speaking it's literally just organized actions. You have to affect the company somehow directly. Go after things they care about like sales sponsors or whatever, but AS A GROUP and strike with high intensity over a short period of time to simulate severity and urgency, just like how "canceling" people is done. Complaining on the internet is the least effective especially when it's centered around these grifters who already lost all credibility in the eyes of the adults.

@kyomu_utsuro You're probably busy as-is, but I'd genuinely be interested to hear what your 'comprehensive guide' would be to approaching these companies when localization or other censorship is damaging the experience. I'd like to think people could do a lot with a bit of direction.

@kyomu_utsuro As much as ragebait sells on the Internet, I'd like to believe that the influencers involved really want positive changes as well. I think they've also fallen into a sense of hopelessness - and so they direct their fury wherever they can.

@kyomu_utsuro Apologies for the multiple tweets, I sadly don't have the Long Tweet powers. I care a lot about the localization discussion but I understand the frustration with people loudly complaining and then not actually doing anything about it. But I know a lot of people do take action.

@kyomu_utsuro 2. True, but localization to the west generally does go through a small network of companies and people. You'd be hard pressed to find media anywhere that hasn't gone through California. It may not always apply, but I understand that people recognize this pattern.

@kyomu_utsuro There've been hundreds of controversies where fans directly addressed the social media and customer support of a given company, but it's like the Japanese creators never hear about it. So what's the best way to reach them to affect proper change?

@kyomu_utsuro Thank you for your thoughts. In localization discourse, I think there's a sense of hopelessness when it comes to reaching Japanese companies. It feels like all feedback they receive goes through the same American branch that imposes these changes, and thus, won't be communicated.

@SaGa_NeilB That doesn't make sense to me, Neil. Your culture and country will shine through in what you make and creators want that to be seen. That's not "othering" or "fetishization," that's cultural appreciation.

Neil Broadley, SaGa Localization Director
Video game localizations are most successful when they make the original work’s themes feel universal. The creators generally don’t want their works to be fetishized or “othered”for being foreign. They want them to be appreciated for their intrinsic value regardless of language.

If you don't mind me being a lil sappy for a sec. over a decade ago I was pushed by my good friend Monty Oum to make this show after telling him everything about it. After his passing I was filled with determination to make good on that, even if it felt impossible. You'll be happy to know I'm dedicating this pilot to him.

@OceanVeil_EN @AnimeKoala What is this process of approval, exactly? Do the original creators understand how the script was changed and why, and did they explicitly approve that? Or was it simply a matter of trusting the localizers, as it usually is?

@AnimeKoala Our official stance is--the scripts and final versions were all approved by KADOKAWA directly. Though we appreciate your opinions. We respect your opinions. Unfortunately, this is all we will say on this matter.
