France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Czechia are now all calling for the “UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories” to be removed from her position. Following the October 7 Massacre she said that while Hamas governed Gaza repressively, it has also constructed schools, hospitals and served as the de facto administration. She suggested that Hamas should not automatically be viewed as ruthless fighters or “cut-throats.” The first senior politician to say that she must step down after her comments at the Al Jazeera conference in Qatar was the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who has said that he will raise it at the UN Human Rights Council. The UN Human Rights Council, which appointed her, is unlikely to take action against her amid the ongoing session in Geneva. She is still supported by a large number of UN member states from the Global South.
