France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Czechia are now all calling for the “UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories” to be removed from her position. Since assuming the role in 2022, she has transformed this unpaid position into a prominent platform for attacks on Israel. It has made her a prominent figure among left-wing and pro-Palestinian activists. Her recent comments have drawn particular controversy. At a conference hosted by Al Jazeera, where other participants included Iran’s foreign minister and a senior Hamas representative, Albanese referred to a “common enemy” of humanity in the context of Western backing for Israel and what she described as a “genocidal narrative.” The exact phrase that made a number of countries convinced that she has to step down was “We now see that, we as humanity, have a common enemy.” This fits into a broader pattern of her statements. Following the October 7 Massacre she said that while Hamas governed Gaza repressively, it has also constructed schools, hospitals and served as the de facto administration. She suggested that Hamas should not automatically be viewed as ruthless fighters or “cut-throats.” The first senior politician to say that she must step down after her comments at the Al Jazeera conference in Qatar was the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who has said that he will raise it at the UN Human Rights Council. The UN Human Rights Council, which appointed her, is unlikely to take action against her amid the ongoing session in Geneva. She is still supported by a large number of UN member states from the Global South.
