Ok folks I think this might be it! Bluesky is bumping, lots of devs chatting and sharing. I'm going to pin this here so you can find me over there... Making game boy games! bsky.app/profile/arroga…

@TELUS @TELUS of course, the "contact us" link doesn't give me a phone number to call. I am expected to do the work of digging through all your unrelated help pages until I can find a phone number because your 2-factor doesn't work.

@TELUS hey what's the phone number I should call to talk to support? I've tried to log in to my account but your 2-factor did not send me a verification code and now it's telling me I've tried to verify my identity too many times.

@yanako_rpgs Next add the tides! Imagine going out to some island at low tide, or walking way out on the mud flats catching starfish and clams... Cycles! The moon! The seasons!

Adding the night cycle to Dokimon is one of the best things I've ever done, I love how it came out so much

@jaggerode @playnevergrind @cnlohr Now admittedly all my experience is with the game boy, which is nowhere near the complexity of a modern CPU and has no OS... So maybe writing graphics intensive games for a modern CPU would actually be hell! But if it is, I think that's not because assembly is inherently harder.

@jaggerode @playnevergrind @cnlohr Actually! "register pressure" forces me to decompose my code better, and "split phase" refactor by default, which leads to code that is easy to read. I once put down a project for several months and came back dreading having to re-learn everything... but it was surprisingly easy!

@KageWolf75 @cnlohr LD is a load instruction, it loads something into the CPUs working memory (or "register" ). The first instruction loads the player's hp into register a. The second instruction DECrements the hp. The last instruction writes the new value back to the player HP.

@KageWolf75 @cnlohr LD a, [player_hp] DEC a LD [player_hp], a Things get more complicated as the CPU, OS, and the hardware you want to interface with gets more complicated... But if you're just updating the game state and drawing it to the screen you don't need a lot of fancy business.

@KageWolf75 @cnlohr It wouldn't make sense if you don't know about CPUs, but if you do then it couldn't be more simple. The cpu has some instructions it understands, and assembly encodes those instructions. Load a value into the CPUs working memory. Act on the value. Write back to RAM. Easy!

@droqen We have talked about this before, but: at some point a few years ago I awoke to the idea of letting the game tell me how to play rather than insisting on playing my way and it's done nothing but good. It takes effort, I have to police myself, but I find it possible and rewarding.

@Andercot But how long do you think it will take us to achieve similar results? Not millions of years, certainly... Maybe hundreds? By the time their ships cross the 4 light years between us, our tech will have far surpassed them. This isn't molecular biology... It's a funeral procession.

Biological systems at the molecular level are impossibly advanced nanotech that we are hopelessly far from engineering ourselves from scratch.

@beforemario There has been a huge influx of tourists and a huge uptick in retro gaming enthusiasm. I've been going to these stores once a year for a decade and have watched the prices rise.
