21 years ago British performance artist Mark McGowan launched a controversial installation titled The Running Tap. Inside the House Gallery in London, he turned on a kitchen faucet with the intention of leaving it running for a full year. His stated goal was to "highlight water wastage" by deliberately wasting 15 million liters of it. The stunt provoked immediate outrage from the public and utility companies during a period of water shortages. After wasting approximately 800,000 liters, Thames Water threatened legal action, forcing McGowan to turn the tap off after just one month. He admitted the piece was difficult to watch, stating, "It's clever because I feel so guilty witnessing the waste."
