Whenever you see an otherwise inexplicable boondoggle (like California’s high speed rail fail) look for the tiny Venn diagram where Green and Union interests intersect. Greens hate to build most stuff, but bike lanes and HSR are ‘good’.

I will reserve final judgment until an agreement is actually reached. But, so far, it looks like the deal Trump is working out with Iran will be no better than the status quo ante, and may well be worse. As I have explained in various writings (see link), this is in large part a consequence of his starting the war without proper congressional authorization (as required by the Constitution) and thereby failing to build the necessary political support for it. As a result, the US has no political staying power, and the enemy knows it, and acts accordingly. thedispatch.com/debates/donald…
