The Chechens became the first victims of Russia’s imperial violence in the history of modern Russia. Few understand this better than Aset Sabb, whose people have struggled for freedom from Russia for generations.

On March 8, 2005, Russian federal forces killed the popularly elected Third President of the #Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (ChRI), Aslan Maskhadov. Maskhadov’s election was held under the observation of OSCE representatives, and he was recognized by the international community as the ChRI’s legitimate head of state. His presidency included several high-profile diplomatic visits to countries like #Georgia, #Azerbaijan, #Russia, and the #UnitedKingdom. It was Maskhadov who signed the 1997 Peace Treaty with Russian President Boris Yeltsin, a document in which both nations recognized each other as subjects of international law. As a dedicated diplomat, Maskhadov believed the conflict between the ChRI and Russia could only be resolved through peaceful, political means. However, the Kremlin "Chekists" including Yeltsin, Patrushev, Rushailo, Ivanov, and Putin chose a different path, launching the devastating Second Russo-Chechen War. Even after the conflict began, Maskhadov declared a unilateral ceasefire in 2005 as a gesture of goodwill to restart negotiations. Instead of a diplomatic response, #Russia tracked him down and killed him. President Maskhadov lived with dignity and left with dignity. In early March 2026, Vladimir Putin condemned the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it a « cynical violation of international law » and « human moral principles. » While Putin positions himself as a defender of state sovereignty, history tells a much bloodier story regarding Russia’s own record. Between 1996 and 2013, Russia systematically eliminated five successive presidents of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria - despite their repeated efforts to reach a diplomatic settlement. 1996: Dzhokhar Dudayev -> repeatedly called for direct talks with Yeltsin; killed by a missile while on a satellite phone. 2004: Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev-> assassinated by GRU agents in Qatar via a car bomb. Russia ignored Qatari sovereignty to carry out the hit. 2005: Aslan Maskhadov -> the most moderate voice; he signed the 1997 peace treaty and was killed while offering a new ceasefire. 2006: Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev-> Continued the call for a political solution based on international law; killed in a special operation. 2013: Dokka Umarov-> died via poisoning by Russian intelligence. The most glaring proof of Russian hypocrisy lies in its treatment of the 1997 Peace Treaty. Dialogue Ignored: President Aslan Maskhadov was not a « terrorist » by international standards; he was a democratically elected leader who sought a peaceful and political resolution of the conflict between Chechnya the Russian Federation. Even after the Second Russian-Chechen War began, Maskhadov issued a unilateral ceasefire in 2005 as a gesture of goodwill to restart negotiations. Russia responded by locating and killing him. #Russia currently claims that killing a foreign leader destabilizes global order. The Deportation of the Vainakh Peoples (Operation Lentil) The deportation, codenamed Operation Lentil (Chechevitza), remains one of the most brutal instances of ethnic cleansing in Soviet history. Conducted during the height of World War II, the operation targeted the #Chechen and #Ingush populations under the collective and largely fabricated accusation of collaboration with Nazi Germany. Key Historical Phases * Under the direct supervision of Lavrentiy Beria, approximately 100,000 NKVD-NKGB troops were deployed to the region. The operation began on Red Army Day to ensure the population was gathered for celebrations, making the round-up more efficient. * Families were packed into unheated freight cars with minimal food or water. The journey to Central Asia lasted several weeks; those who fell ill or could not keep up were often executed on the spot or left to die of exposure. * Upon arrival in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the Vainakh people were classified as « special settlers. » They were subjected to a regime of forced labor, restricted movement, and severe malnutrition. The demographic toll was catastrophic. While estimates vary, it is widely recognized that between 30% and 50% of the entire population perished within the first few years. Beyond the loss of life, the Soviet state attempted to erase the Vainakh identity by: 1. Abolishing the Chechen-Ingush ASSR and dividing its territory. 2. Renaming towns and villages with Russian names. 3. Destroying cultural heritage, including ancient towers, cemeteries, and manuscripts. It was not until 1957, during the « Khrushchev Thaw, » that the survivors were allowed to return to their ancestral lands, though they faced decades of continued discrimination and property disputes upon their arrival. In 2004, the European Parliament officially recognized the deportation of 1944 as an act of genocide, citing the intentional creation of conditions designed to bring about the partial destruction of the ethnic group. - We will never forget! #deportation #23february #sovietrepression

Mr. Movlaev faces a real and well-documented risk of #persecution, #torture, and inhuman treatment if returned. The extradition request relies on politically motivated charges fabricated by the authorities of the Russian Federation due to his #Chechen origin. Any forced return of Mr. Movlaev would constitute a violation of Kazakhstan’s international obligations, in particular the principle of non-refoulement under international human rights law. We respectfully draw the attention of the #UnitedNations to the case of Zelimkhan Murtazov, a #Chechen national who has been held for over one month in the transit zone of #Astana International Airport, #Kazakhstan. Mr. Murtazov is at real risk of persecution, torture, and inhuman treatment if returned to Russia. His continued confinement without access to #asylum procedures or the possibility to travel to a third safe country raises serious concerns under international human rights law, including the principle of non-refoulement.
