A 37-year-old man from Chilton, County Durham, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for raping a young girl and committing multiple other sexual offences against her. Lee Aunger, of Denebridge Row, was convicted after a trial at Durham Crown Court in early March 2026 of one count of rape, seven counts of sexual assault, and one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, 22 May 2026. The court heard that the offending has caused the victim "great harm". The girl has struggled at school and been unable to focus on her lessons as a result of the abuse. Judge Nathan Adams said she is likely to continue struggling with the impact "for a long time". The judge told Aunger he had attacked the child for his own sexual gratification and described the 17-year sentence as appropriate for the serious harm caused. Aunger, who has no previous convictions, continues to maintain his innocence but respects the jury's decision. Defence barrister Caroline McGurk said he is of previous good character, has been in long-term employment, and has received numerous positive character references. As an "offender of particular concern", Aunger must serve at least two-thirds of his 17-year sentence (approximately 11 years and four months) before he can apply for parole. He will only be released if the Parole Board considers it safe to do so. He has been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, made subject to a 25-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and given a 25-year restraining order for the protection of the victim. He will also be referred to the Disclosure and Barring Service, which will prevent him from working with children in the future.

He was charged with three counts of making indecent photo/pseudo-photos of a child, one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child, and two counts of distributing an indecent photo/pseudo-photo of a child. The charges involve more than a thousand images between November 2021 and February 2025 and were located on Ely's mobile phone, including both still photographs and videos. Ely shared many of the images showing child rape or sexual torture with like-minded perverts online. Ely will also have to participate in a Rehabilitation Activity for a maximum of 35 days, carry out 175 hours of unpaid work and pay £156 in costs. He was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and will be on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 Years. Source UK Database.

It amounts to torture. “The public revulsion and humiliation which you have received is part of your punishment.” Prosecutor Margia Mostafa told Luton crown court that the 49-year-old officer was arrested on May 16 last year by Bedfordshire police who raided the married officer’s home in March. An iPad and three laptops were examined. Officers found 99 Category A still and moving images – the most serious level. There were 208 at Category B and 218 at Category C, the least serious level. Search terms used by Nicholls including the words: “F…… Boys,” “Incest”, “Brazilian boys” and “Teen boys kissing.” In one image a baby was being raped and in another a 12 year was being orally raped. He had used the internet site Tumblr to distribute a Category B and a Category C image. When he was interviewed he did not answer police questions, but in a prepared statement he apologised and said he would seek professional help. Nicholls, who now lives in Doncaster, appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to three charges of making (downloading) indecent photograph/pseudo photographs of a child and two of distributing indecent photographs/pseudo photographs of a child. He had been a beat bobby and the Fenland licensing officer, before being sacked by Cambridgeshire police on July 3. In 2011 he told a local community website in March that he wanted the town to be a dangerous place for criminals. He boasted on the ShapeYourPlace website: “I love locking them up, the more I can get off the streets the better the chances of me having a smiley photo.” Judge Mensah sentenced him to 15 months in jail suspended for two years. He must attend a ‘Horizon’ sex offender programme, carry out 20 days of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 200 hours’ unpaid work. The iPad and Laptops were forfeited and he has 28 days to pay £300 costs. In addition, he must register as a sex offender and abide by the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years.
