Government says there is no money to support South African entrepreneurs. They reject funding applications, citing “budgetary limitations” and “competing funding priorities,” even for businesses that meet the minimum requirements. Yet the same government can approve over R30 million for FIFA World Cup related activities. This is exactly why South Africans are frustrated. It’s not that government doesn’t have money it’s that it chooses where to spend it, and far too often, ordinary citizens come last. Imagine if that R30 million had been invested in township businesses, youth entrepreneurs, struggling SMMEs, or community safety initiatives. Instead, aspiring business owners are told there’s no budget while millions are allocated elsewhere. South Africa doesn’t have a shortage of potential it has a shortage of priorities. A government that cannot justify spending tens of millions on one programme while turning away entrepreneurs because of “budgetary limitations” needs to explain its choices. Taxpayers deserve better. Public money should build businesses, create jobs, and strengthen communities not deepen the perception that government has lost touch with the realities facing ordinary South Africans.
