Healthcare in India is becoming a money making machine. A friend’s grandmother is in ICU for the last 4 days. Daily medicine cost alone is around 40–50K. He is not allowed inside ICU. He cannot see the treatment. He cannot see which medicines are actually being used. He can only stand outside and keep paying. Medicines go from pharmacy to ICU. Families don’t know what is used, what is not. Maybe some goes back from the back door. But there is no transparency. Only bills. Private hospitals know families won’t argue when their loved one is in ICU. This is not just treatment. For many families, this is financial destruction in the name of healthcare.

“We can’t stand in queues like the general public,” say our elected representatives. Yet it is that very public that stands in line to vote them into power, pays for the system they enjoy, and is now being told that equality ends where privilege begins. Sad is this justice! Do you agree with me?

One thing I have been continuously requesting from the government for a long time is that they should announce a Nutri-Grade system. With this, brands will not be able to fool consumers by claiming unhealthy products as healthy. Grade A: Healthiest Choice Grade B: Better Choice Grade C: Moderate Choice Grade D: High Sugar Singapore is already doing this. Also, ban misleading advertisements like “fresh ketchup,” “fresh juice,” or “fresh paneer.” How can packaged items ever be fresh? You’ll start to notice that small brands often have healthier products than bigger brands. Industries will be forced to improve their product formulas to achieve a better Nutri-Grade.
