A guy came to me this morning complaining bitterly that his wife of one year has become 'rebellious' and refuses to submit to his financial leadership. I asked him what happened. He brought out his phone and showed me an Excel spreadsheet he created to track her grocery shopping. He said, 'Mimi, look at this. I gave her 30k for market money on Friday (yesterday). She spent 20k on food stuffs, but she spent 8k on "Miscellaneous Snacks" like plantain chips and ice cream. Is that how a submissive, builder wife behaves in this economy? I looked at the spreadsheet, looked at his face, and asked him, 'Sir, what is your own personal monthly budget for beer and suya with your boys?' He went completely silent. He started stammering, 'That one is different! I am the provider! My relaxation money is part of my hard work!' I just laughed and told him: 'So you want a wife who builds an empire with you, but she cannot even eat a 500 Naira plantain chip without entering your Excel database? That is what we call monitoring spirit for the wrong reasons. The man got angry and said I am teaching modern women to be unaccountable. So far my communication with some men, I have come to realize that they expect their wives to manage a home like a professional accountant while they are spending money outside like an oil mogul. Why are this becoming this way in marriages?
