Her name is Draupadi Murmu. She was born on June 20 1958 in Baidaposi village, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. She belonged to the Santali tribal community. Her family had no electricity, no paved road, no running water. She was the first girl in her village to complete her education. She became a teacher, then entered politics. She won her first election to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000. She served as a state minister and in 2015 was appointed Governor of Jharkhand, the first woman from a tribal community to hold a gubernatorial position in India. During those years she carried a weight most people did not know about. In 2009 her son Laxman died suddenly. In 2012 her second son Sipun died. In 2014 her husband Shyam Charan Murmu died. Three deaths in six years. She did not take leave. She did not stop working. People who worked with her said she never discussed her grief in public. She once said she had found strength in spirituality. That is all she ever said about it. On July 25 2022 Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India. She was the first tribal woman to hold the office and the first President of India born after independence. When she arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the day of her swearing in she performed a ritual at the threshold. She bent down and touched the ground before entering. She later said she was thinking of her village. Of all the people who could not be there. She went from a village with no electricity to the highest constitutional office in the country. She did it after losing everything that mattered most to her at home. Follow for stories India deserves to remember.
