I calculated what I’d be giving up if I leave public school: roughly $830,000 over my lifetime, assuming I retire at 65 and live to 80. This is why so many teachers stay once they’ve put in 10 years. The financial handcuffs are real. But money doesn't buy happiness, so I'm choosing to exit the insanity. About 35 more school days left until my next adventure begins.

@TheMattViera This is not the norm, esp. within the last decade. Your friend must have been fortunate to have worked in the same state/district for at least 30 years, is married, and is at the highest tier of the district's salary scale. Teaching has become more of a dysfunctional gig economy.

@FixingEducation My kids HAVE to take fruit. So in the middle school lunchroom every child has an unwanted projectile/figit toy art project. The teachers spend an inordinate amount of time policing fruit-related behavior of the children who HAVE to take the fruit.

I swear 75% of my students are running on Hot Cheetos, Takis, and 3–5 energy drinks a day. That’s not just a bad habit, it’s a real problem. Poor nutrition in childhood doesn’t just affect the body, it impacts brain development, focus, and long-term health.🧠

@FixingEducation Like this hasn't been happening for decades already? Students used to down Red Bull and bring cafeteria ramen to class after mid-morning break.

@eastbaycitizen @JohnJHarwood Soooo, at the local level (in one of the more affluent areas of the SF Bay), y'all knew of ES's multipke "dalliances", but did not investigate further, or expose such egregious actions, during his time in local office? What held y'all back, and why?

I’ve covered Eric Swawell since he was a member of the Dublin City Council. Shortly after being elected to Congress in 2013, his behavior towards women was known by all levels of our local government and the Alameda County Democratic Party.

@kurtbardella @KamalaHarris Harris was not a strong VP, and she would not make a good governor. If she wants to remain in politics, she'd be better off running for Senator or a different role.

@NexusStratify @DrBradJohnson @EdChatIE Many of us in the US understand this all too well. Been happening for decades. Yet, the media are finally re-starting the topic of how student behavior is a major factor of Ts leaving for other, non-abusive careers.

@DrBradJohnson "breaking up fights; being cursed at, threatened...assaulted" - exactly this, and do you know what happened? Nothing, because I had to go teach my next class. I called in sick the next day though. Then, lo & behold, my contract wasn't renewed for the following year! @EdChatIE

We don’t have a classroom management problem. We have an emotional regulation crisis that teachers are being asked to handle. Somehow, “classroom management” has turned into: • de-escalating trauma • supporting anxiety and depression • calming panic attacks • breaking up fights • being cursed at, threatened, and even assaulted • being the counselor, social worker, and crisis team And at the same time… we remove the very things that actually help: • recess • movement • art • play • connection Teachers aren’t trained for this. And they shouldn’t have to be. Classroom management was never meant to do all of this. It’s about: relationships rules routines responsibility That’s it. It was never designed to replace what families, communities, and systems failed to provide. And until we stop offloading every societal failure onto schools, teachers will keep drowning under expectations no human can meet.

@JenBeOneB1 @DrBradJohnson And those factors will never address when HS students literally (covertly) break their student desks and yell out obscenities and threats like s*xually assaulting you - and the only "deterrent" is to have security put 'em on the golf carts for an office time out.

@DrBradJohnson You have to love the job, love teaching and learning and love kids to be a good teacher. It also helps to like parents and be able to interact with people from all walks of life. And - have knowledge, and know how to impart it. And lead by example. You need to have energy.

@latsondheimer It's been that way for a long time. The only price relief🙄 to attend a game in a major sports city like SF is to take BART or other public transportation.

There comes a point where the price of admission, price of parking, price of food becomes too much in the sports experience. I don’t know how it is in small towns but it’s reaching a point of no return for many in Los Angeles. Problem.

@BarryNSmith79 @edudissenter Yet to see admin/other top school leader activey punish Ss who regularly yell, "I'm going to r#&e you/find where you live and sh@nk you, B!+c#!" Try to recover from that daily, yet being too drained to keep contacting parents/writing up the defiance - trauma.

Schools have denied there’s a major behaviour issue in many many schools. Vast majority. For decades. Schools/trusts refuse to acknowledge the truth. It’s pr poison. That impacts upon careers. PR prevails because school/trust leaders protecting huge salaries. Understandable.
Cory Brewer@CoryJBrewer

It is becoming increasingly evident that the top reason teachers are getting burnt out and leaving the profession is student behavior. Teachers deserve more support from their administrators and school boards to manage orderly classrooms.

Question for the veteran teachers: I've been teaching for just about 9 years now and something I see with most of my students is that they don't read instructions before they ask for help / clarification and they need to have EVERYTHING explained to them, even the most simple things I basically can't assume they'll figure anything out (even simple instructions) and have to hold their hands through just about everything Is this more prevalent now compared to, lets say 20 years ago, or has it always been this way?
