@oderiviere Ah, I see what you mean. It is good thatsites like VGMdb exist, whichallow one to browse through most of what a game composer has done (most is usually documented.) I often discover a composer through a particular OST and then use the site to discover&check out their other works.

@AstraProc First point is that composers get exposed (vast majority) because they are attached to a successful game. Which is “mechanical”, they could have written beautiful music prior on unknown games, yet they didn’t “exist”

The discussion around video games music in a nutshell: - A hit game = a composer exist - History of VGM = bleeps and bloops - Best OST ever = name the games you like the most I understand the appeal but I don't think it helps in giving players a better experience.

@oderiviere So what happens then is that they share said music to other's who don't have the context, and to them that (often context dependant) music is boring as shit. It's best to share and discuss game music that is simply great music in or out of context. 2/2

@oderiviere Not sure what you mean by the first point, but the third one is pretty true and annoying. Often people share game music they like only because they are envisioning the in game context they experienced it in as they hear it, but not actually because of the music itself. 1/2

As well as all that, there is also just the localizer classic of rewriting a bunch of dialogue to sound "cooler" in their eyes. For instance, a lot of Lucina's iconic lines are actually just made up by the localizers, for example all that she says in the chp 6 assassin cutscene.

One key thing I noticed is that any dialogue that is remotely sexual was totally censored by the localizers. For instance, the topic of small breasts comes up multiple times in the Robin x Cordelia support, yet that was removed in English. 2/3

I have been playing through Fire Emblem Awakening in Japanese lately, and am realizing that this game was actually censored by the localizers very heavily. Perhaps just as much as Fates, yet it's not talked about nearly as much. 1/2

@_tokuninai @CuteAndFunnyAlt @magicrit The SRS? 90%? Tbh I am not sure what you mean with these terms here lol. I just do the card until I have the reading somewhat memorized, but I suppose there is more to it than that.

@AstraProc @CuteAndFunnyAlt @magicrit You just gotta trust the SRS, it takes time but if you hurry beyond your capability you're not gonna go any faster. More than timeyou should check your accuracy, if you're consistently failing to reach 90% (I used 95% myself) you should lower your new cards per day.

@_tokuninai @CuteAndFunnyAlt @magicrit I do see your point and there are some days where I feel it is unproductive for me to do too much. However, I do feel that if I don't review each word I mined the previous day even once (even if its a lot of words and takes longer than 15m), then I will just forget the word.

@AstraProc @CuteAndFunnyAlt @magicrit I've been doing Anki for years, and I've gone through periods of massive reps and not. Limiting Anki to 15 minutes per day and spending all leftover time in reading/listening is much more productive imho. pic related my Japanese mining deck (deleted the 6k one two years ago)

@LagSpike776 Hm, never seen this card format before, what's its purpose? Training drawing kanji from memory or smthing? Seems like that is what he is doing but I dunno.

@_tokuninai @CuteAndFunnyAlt @magicrit I know that's what a certain guide says, but I think it depends on how much one is studying per day. Like it can be longer than 15m and still the same percentage of your overall study if study all day. Also depends on how much new vocabulary one just encountered the day prior.

@linkasobi @OtakuNijikon True, it is likely that poor localization played a role in my reception, so I do actually plan to replay the entire trilogy in Japanese at some point. I do have quite a few fundamental issues with the narrative, and I doubt all can be blamed on the localization, but we shall see.

@AstraProc @OtakuNijikon Garbage localization plays a huge role here actively destroying characterization and characters' charm. I still enjoyed 3 more than 1.

The raw numbers make it even more shockingly evident. The red bar is essentially its cultural impact or longevity. The high 1st quarter sales of XB3 are merely based on hype, coattailing off XB2's popularity. Once people realized it's soulless it died off. XB2 on the other hand.

@linkasobi @OtakuNijikon I do think 3 has better gameplay (no surprise there) but I thought the story was a lot worse than 1's. 3's script was written by a pseudo-intellectual.

@linkasobi @Pacifist_Elk I intend to play it in JP eventually, but would already be curious to hear some examples of these personality changes.

@Pacifist_Elk Not to mention about personality rewrite on basically every single character. Seriously, people who played this game with official localization have no idea what's the game is about and how the character were written.

My favorite example of this is how the localization of Xenoblade 2 tried to wipe out all of the Japanese naming conventions and replace it with westernized ones, only for that to become a major and important thing when the XC2 aligned faction in XC3 was extremely Japan coded.
Mini Modu@MinModulation

Careless translation is just kind of stupid. Early on in FFXIV, they had altered some characters personalities from Japanese, only to run into problems when they had become major characters later down the line in the first expansion, because they lacked the necessary foresight.

@jXblasted The andesutte translation was so much better in the xseed translation. They tried a more literal translation of that line in the remake and half the reviewers playing the english version were kinda annoyed by how much estelle goes "whaaat?"

This is something Carpe Fulgur loved doing. Taking basic, easily translated and "unimportant" dialogue as free rein to mostly throw out the original script and replace it with quirky, semi-ironic humor.

Gorgone@Gorgonner6

@UnhingedPiggy @jXblasted "Capitalism ho" was just generally made up; they either inserted it into lines as an extra or replaced lines like はい with it. "Yayyifications" replaced Recette saying やった, and likely others in the same manner. They also invented new lines entirely at points, like this one.
