Years ago, in Hip Hop, terms such as “Underrated” & “Classic” were terms that were not frequently used, unless it was an actual factual accurate time to use them. Nowadays, the fans (and the artist) use these terms as regular as the rain. The word UNDERRATED was reserved for the rapper who had a high level of talent, they displayed that talent, yet the song, project or the artist themselves was being overlooked for one reason or another. Enter Joe Budden: “A Loose Quarter” (mixtape). When you want an example of the proper usage of the word “underrated”, look no further than this tape. This was a time where Joe was heavily into his JBTV uploads (no bullshit, he might’ve been the 1st Streamer), he was getting under alotta peoples skin with the things he’d say, he was in a rap super group and still working as a solo MC. Somehow thru all that “noise”, he managed to put together and drop this tape which was full of hard truths, brutal honesty and most of all, deep cutting vulnerability. Even the title of the project sounds as if it’s a slight jab. (Actively in a rap group, you break away for a moment and name your solo project “A Loose Quarter”? Lol I love that kinda subliminal chaos). This project is HIGHLY underrated. #MommaSaid, #OffToTheRaces, #WordsOfAChameleon, are 3 personal favorites and #Dreams was such a perfectly placed random gem, shoutout to @TrevRichHD. The substance. The wordplay. Extremely underrated indeed. This is Joe at his best.
