What a momentous occasion! Just moments ago, the team was gathered at Seattle HQ to celebrate the announcement of Interlune as part of the @Astrolab_Space team for the @NASA Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV). Dubbed CLV-1, the Astrolab rover will provide mobility services for the Artemis program. We’re proud to be a member of the team, along with @Axiom_Space, @OdysseySpaceRes, and @Venturi, that will deliver the LTV to NASA’s Moon Base by 2028. The task order is valued at approximately $219 million, and Interlune will work with Astrolab on many aspects of the rover development, involving the science of survival in the lunar environment. The Interlune Research Lab (IRL) in Houston will develop and test regolith simulants specifically for CLV-1. Congratulations to the entire Astrolab team and the rest of the awardees today! We are proud to be partnering with @Axiom_Space, @OdysseySpaceRes and @InterluneSpace to deliver CLV-1 and related services capable of supporting NASA crewed and robotic surface missions. Thanks also to strategic partner @Venturi Space who is providing important technology to CLV-1 like tires and batteries.

@NASAMoonBase just announced the selection of @Astrolab_Space as one of two Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) award winners. Crew Lunar Vehicle #1 is an adaptation of their FLEX Lunar Innovative Platform (FLIP) & can work either autonomously, can be tele-operated, or can transport up to two crew members. I recently interviewed @Astrolab_Space about FLIP's unique wheel design builds on Apollo/Mars rover lessons but rethinks for long-term sustainable ops, far beyond prior visions. This tech could enable long-term habitation/ops on Moon & Mars surfaces. Check out this short video clip of that interview to learn more! Congrats to everyone at @Astrolab_Space for being selected by @NASA as a critical part of the establishment of a lunar base & setting the stage for ever bigger & more capable LTV’s in the future!

Introducing Astrolab’s Crewed Lunar Vehicle (CLV-1), chosen by @NASA to transport crew across the lunar surface and support the construction of a permanent lunar base. Adapted from our FLEX rover architecture reflecting NASA’s revised approach to lunar surface mobility, CLV-1 is designed to support astronaut operations, science activities, and cargo logistics on the Moon.

As our FLIP rover prepares for the final stages of pre-flight testing, we’re seeing our animations turn into space-ready hardware. Next step, doing it all on the Moon.

Now that FLIP has completed its first drive, what’s next for our rover before it heads to the Moon? Next up is final testing, including shock testing, vibration testing, and FLIP’s last thermal and vacuum chamber (TVAC) test. These tests ensure the fully assembled rover can survive launch and the harsh conditions of the lunar surface. Then FLIP heads to Cape Canaveral, FL! There it will be integrated onto the top of @astrobotic's Griffin lander and prepped for launch. Exciting milestones in FLIP’s journey are coming very soon!

Artemis era rovers need to operate both with human assistance, as well as autonomously. LiDAR is one of the key tools that will make that possible. Hardened by @NASA_Marshall in partnership with Fibertek, Astrolab will use this LiDAR perception system aboard our FLIP rover to test the technology on the Moon. The payload is adapted for the severe conditions on the Moon, and FLIP will use it to capture high-resolution 3D scenes of its surroundings for navigation, obstacle detection, and hazard avoidance.

One of our FLIP rover’s payloads connects all the way back to Apollo 11! One of four @NASA payloads on board FLIP, @NASAGoddard's Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) serves as a marker that works with orbiting satellites to establish a navigation aid for lunar exploration. This builds on the legacy of the larger Laser Ranging Retroreflectors (LRRR) of the Apollo era. By shining a laser beam from one spacecraft toward FLIP’s LRA, the spacecraft can measure how long it takes for the light to reflect back, allowing scientists to determine the distance between it and FLIP. FLIP’s LRA is the first ever mounted on a lunar rover to reflect laser beams. Made of eight quartz corner-cube prisms set into a dome-shaped aluminum frame, FLIP’s array requires no power or maintenance. After the rover completes its mission, the LRA will remain a permanent location marker on the Moon. It will be used for future exploration and lunar research, just as Apollo-era lunar retroreflectors are still used to this day. The images show the LRA currently on FLIP and the Apollo 11 Laser Ranging Retroreflector experiment on the Moon, (Credit: NASA)

Testing the next gen lunar surface space suit. It's easy to climb into (through the back), has good mobility, the gloves work fine. We were evaluating the interfaces with the @Astrolab_Space rover - launching to the Moon later this year. Great to see and experience the new legacy of the @Axiom_Space suit in their Houston test rig.

We’re excited to welcome payloads from four @NASA centers on board our FLIP rover’s mission to the Moon! They include: -METAL, a multicolor camera and radiometer developed by @NASAAmes in partnership with @InterluneSpace, to estimate helium-3 concentrations in lunar regolith. -A Laser Retroreflector Array created by @NASAGoddard. It is the first LRA mounted on a lunar rover to retro-reflect laser beams for precision tracking of the rover’s position by an orbital laser altimeter. -The Lunar Dust Experiment Sensor (LDES) by @NASA_Johnson quantifies dust-induced degradation of critical Moon Base and Lander subsystems, including significant loss in radiator cooling and reduced solar array power generation. -A  Lunar LiDAR Demonstration by @NASA_Marshall adapted for extreme lunar conditions to generate high-resolution 3D surface maps for navigation, obstacle detection, and hazard avoidance.
