This is amazing news, thank you to the @RoyalAstroSoc and the Patricia Tomkins Foundation for this award! And of course to the amazing optical interferometry group in Cambridge, who this wouldn't have been possible without.

The winner of the 2022 Patricia Tomkins Thesis Prize is Dr Daniel Mortimer for the thesis entitled 'Designing a beam combiner for faint limiting magnitudes in optical interferometry'.

Incredibly excited to announce that this fall I will start as a postdoc working with @tadkomacek at @UMDAstronomy! Can't wait to continue exploring hot Jupiter atmospheres :) It was a super stressful job cycle and I want to thank everyone who supported the process!!

3:19:24 Not a PR but a damn fine time on a tough course on a cold rainy day with a headwind. I requalified as well. Time for recovery!

@EricMamajek Would @CHARAArray be useful for achieving the goals of NN-Explore? Chara interferometry is available through noirlab and can find close-in companions with contrasts 1000:1 while also measuring stellar diameters precisely.

@GioiaRau @michiganastro @MichiganAero “Fortunately” the atmosphere is terrible in visible so we only need to stabilize better than the that — coherence times 5milliseconds — to find new science capability

How are we developing drones as a platform for interferometry here at @michiganastro and @MichiganAero? We start by using motion capture technology from Hollywood to establish position and orientation stability in realtime while flying.

@GioiaRau @michiganastro @MichiganAero Currently this work is pushed by amazing UM undergraduates in astro and aero. Lots of basic characterization needed of vibration level and flight stability. I’ll try to keep posting updates.

Here at @michiganastro with @MichiganAero prof @jwcutler , we are developing formation flying drones to prepare for a future cubesat interferometer program. This Alta-X drone is powerful enough to carry a 6U cubesat for test purposes.
