R600M BOOST FOR EASTERN CAPE The Eastern Cape government has put aside R600-million to strengthen agriculture and improve food security. The funding will support small-scale farmers with tools, infrastructure and training to boost productivity and efficiency. A key focus is the Ilima Lokulima Programme, which aims to expand food production at household level, reaching 35,000 homes in the coming year. The initiative is designed to increase local food supply, support livelihoods and reduce dependence on external sources of food. BANNED FOR LIFE South Africa’s auditing watchdog has banned former VBS Mutual Bank auditor Sipho Malaba for life. He was also fined nearly R11-million for approving a clean audit opinion while the bank was looted of R2bn. The regulator found “ghost auditing”, ethical breaches, and loans of over R25-million given to Malaba as inducements. The VBS collapse, dubbed “The Great Bank Heist”, exposed widespread corruption. An abandoned, hijacked CBD building turned into a fully let student housing success story👏💪 Remington House, situated on Nugget Street in Johannesburg, has been transformed into a green-certified mixed-use building with affordable rental units and is fully let. The office block was previously abandoned and later hijacked. Today, she’s a student accommodation success story. Details of the building: •⁠ Building area: 7 191m2 •⁠ 133 bachelor apartments •⁠ 5 ground-floor retail shops •⁠ 14 parking bays •⁠ Amenities: study centre and gym •⁠ EDGE results: Energy 27.81%; Water 22.40%; Materials (embodied carbon) 51.00% •⁠ Resource systems: Centralised heat pumps; solar installation; borehole and filtration; LED lighting; low-flow fixtures; dual-flush toilets; optimised façade glazing So many buildings have been hijacked in this street; one can only hope that more can be saved. This conversion was made possible by TUHF, for which I give huge kudos. We would love to see more of this.
