Jehlum
Brief History
Jhelum is one of the oldest cities of the Punjab region, situated along the banks of the Jhelum River. Its history dates back to ancient times when it was part of the Achaemenid Empire and later became known due to Alexander the Great’s campaign in 326 BCE. The famous Battle of the Hydaspes between Alexander and King Porus is believed to have taken place near the Jhelum River.
During the Mauryan, Kushan, and Gupta periods, the region remained a significant trade and cultural route. Under the Mughal Empire, Jhelum flourished as an administrative and agricultural center. Later, during Sikh rule, it gained military importance.
Under British rule, Jhelum became known as the “Land of Soldiers,” because a large number of its people served in the British Indian Army. Even today, Jhelum is famous for producing many officers and soldiers for Pakistan’s armed forces.
Modern Jhelum is a blend of history, military heritage, and natural beauty—marked by its forts, river landscapes, and historical sites like Rohtas Fort (nearby).
