@Atomik_Research @peacockreports What’s really worrying is there’s general consensus that this summer will be a lot drier than average. We’ve in massive trouble in the SE. Where I am we had 5% of our average April rainfall following a dry March and I reckon May will also be way drier than average.

The past few days has seen a wobbly but increasingly convincing trend in the modelling for more settled & warmer weather in Europe next week. There's now more of a ridge of high pressure between the lows over the Atlantic & southeast Europe.

Looking for something warmer? Well I have good news for you. Compelling signs of a marked pattern change to warm ridge influence moving northwards across UK later next week. It could potentially become very warm, dry and sunny. A possible early introduction to summer.

@Atomik_Research @peacockreports I can wager a lot of money it will be drizzle. Every time a decent dollop of rain has been predicted this month it's ended up as drizzle for a few minutes,

@NickJF75 if enough moisture is available in the atmosphere but often this cold air is of dry nature...we'd need a moist plume from S to get some great storms

500 hPa heights are forecast to be unusually low on Thursday across Germany, Denmark, Low Countries, N France and SE England, in the lowest 2.5 to 1% percentile rank. 500 hPa temps forecast as low as -32C across E England too, hence steep lapse rates with surface heating in sunny spells - which will support heavy showers with hail & thunder

Air of arctic origin spreads south on Wednesday, cold mid-levels (-25 to -30C at 500mb) and surface heating in sunny spells will create steep lapse rates which will support heavy showers accompanied by hail & thunder by afternoon, should be some nice crisp convective cloudscapes. Thursday may see a repeat towards the east. Risk of frost overnight as showers die out and skies clear, so gardeners beware!

@Atomik_Research From research I've seen lately it seems a strong El Niño would support a turnaround but a very strong or 'super' one favours a drier than usual summer. It even appears that this can apply to the subsequent summer as well, though I expect that depends on what follows the El Niño.

@peacockreports unless summer will turn wet (maybe? is this super El-Nino about to save us?) we could be heading into a long drought period - i can see grass turning brown in London and trees stressed! Oh and on top is -1C this morning

@Atomik_Research Meanwhile the models are rather non-committal regarding whether much rain falls over here in CS England. While this region hasn't been as stubbornly dry as SE England, it's still seen well below normal rainfall since 16th March. 17.3 mm here during that time.

@peacockreports if history thought us anything is that after such a prolonged dry period - showers seems to be limited and out of energy/water to actually form or deliver - so i do expect pretty much nothing or 1-2mm over the period - looking at Paris - 50mm on Sun - how lucky

@Atomik_Research It'll be a sick joke if Wednesday doesn't deliver at least something in that region given the proximity to the low in the North Sea with rapid surface heating in sunny spells beneath an unusually cold airmass aloft with reasonable moisture content.
