One to replace the previous pinned post - there’s a whole load of weather on this page so feel free to stick around if you want to with a sprinkle of aurora whenever that peps up. I hope this picture of me and a goose from this morning is suitable for now!

No words. Here is a peak at one of our most incredible drone flights around a #tornado to date near Tulliby Lake, AB. The odds were completely stacked against us on this one, but thanks to some determination to make the 18 hour drive up here pulling an all-nighter, and brilliant forecasting by Nelson Tucker we were able to see this beauty. This will likely be one of our last intercepts of the season, thank you so much to everyone for following along as we press on to properly measure tornadoes to push weather science forward! #stormchasing #nature #weather

23 days of ≥30ºC so far this year in the UK, with three prolonged periods of ≥30ºC temperatures, with one ongoing [23rd May to 28th May, 21st to 27th June and 5th July to now]. The record in a year appears to be 34 in 1995, with 2018 following at 28. Last year we only had 16!

On a completely unrelated note, this was the synoptic situation the last time England was in the semi finals for the World Cup alongside the current forecast. 😁

@meulenbeld_rick @Met4CastUK Can’t imagine they’ll stick at those threshold values for too long, probably until the next lot of averages for 2001-2030

Many places will be on their 8th heatwave day after today, with at least 5-7 days of hot, dry weather still to come this is turning into a phenomenal period of weather.

@Met4CastUK Why does the UK have different criteria for a heatwave per station? I've never seen that in another country

As high pressure and low pressure push against each other, a tightening of the isobars will result in a strengthening wind across southern regions of the UK 🌬️ By the end of the weekend, it will turn particularly gusty through the English Channel with choppy seas developing 🌊

It is very likely that Kew will exceed its previous record of 30°C or higher days in the next week which currently stands at 20 days from 1995. 19 days as of today, just shy of the record and we are only on the 11th of July, unprecedented by this time of year.

@moog77 @orangesky_JC I’ll be honest I didn’t realise there was this much discourse over how old a pub is

An increasing North Sea undercut is helping to moderate temperatures - will probably still reach close to 30°C here in Hertfordshire whilst East Kent may be in low 20s!

9 days of >34°C 6 days of >35°C We’re only on the 11th of July and those are the numbers so far this year. This summer is likely to be in the top list of all summers on record in the UK, even if there was relatively ‘mediocre’ warmth from now on.
