I’ve worked with brilliant engineers, PMs, and world-class leaders. There is one soft skill that to me, consistently set the best apart. They were kind, not just nice. This isn't easy. When your job isn’t just a job, but a lifeline, a visa, etc. - being nice often feels safer than being real. "Nice" is safer. "Kind" takes courage. It’s about caring enough to be real, even when it’s uncomfortable. Nice: "Code review - lgtm!" Kind: "This works, but here’s a cleaner pattern. Want to pair on it?" Nice: Staying silent when someone dominates. Kind: "Let’s make space for more voices." Nice: "You’re doing great, just stay the course." Kind: "You’re ready to take a leap. I’ll back you." Nice: Avoiding the conversation. Kind: Addressing it with respect, aiming for resolution. Nice: Keeping a meeting that isn’t useful. Kind: Canceling it, and giving people their time back. Nice keeps the peace. Kind moves us forward.
