We remember. We honor. We carry forward. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week preceding that date as Police Week. This solemn week recognizes officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage. In Aurora, we remember the six officers who have given everything so that the residents of this City may stay safe. And, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the women and men who continue to show up every day to serve and protect with honor and an everlasting commitment to the community. 💙

Moderate snowfall continues across the city this morning, with total accumulations ranging from 4 to 6 inches. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. this afternoon, with another 1 to 2 inches of snow expected before the storm moves out later this evening. The Public Works Department will continue to have 21 snowplows on the road today, applying deicer and plowing as needed. As the storm moves out this evening, the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning from 8 p.m. tonight through 8 a.m. tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-20’s, which could cause icy areas on roadways. Public Works will continue to monitor conditions and have crews on the road as needed. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch effective at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, until 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. Heavy, wet snow is expected to begin around mid-afternoon today, with 2 to 5 inches of slushy accumulation. Snow will likely accumulate on natural surfaces, with some slushy accumulation possible on pavement in areas of heavier overnight snowfall. The city’s Public Works Department will deploy 23 snowplows beginning at 2 p.m. today and continuing through Wednesday afternoon, or until winter conditions persist. Recently, two of our officers visited a local elementary school to share what we do at APD and connect with students in the community. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, learn about the role of a police officer and see a patrol vehicle up close, complete with flashing lights and equipment. We always appreciate opportunities like this to engage with young learners and share the “why” behind the badge while building trust and relationships in our community. These interactions with our youngest Aurora residents can make a lasting impact and we hope these students remember this day!
