We are reaching the bare minimum point where the purple columns begin to matter for me. Here is a list of players with 3+ Barrels this year, secondary sorted by Swinging Strike % (BR vr).
The goal with adding the purple columns (Plate Discipline Metrics) was to be able to try and capture swing decision tendencies for players, witness improvements, degradation, and recognize player archtypes for projection. This will be a long post, apologies in advance.
For the L1/L3 reports I post on here, these columns are meaningless. The sample is too small. How I personally plan on using this is to prioritize players making good swing decisions (low SwStr%/low Chase %/high Z-Con%) in the 25-100AB range, that are on the L1/L3 report. You can do this easily by going to blast-report.com/daily-reports, and using the pre-programmed buttons.
This will eventually work in conjunction with the Daily Pitchers to Target report, which will have much of the same metrics. If that all seems like too much for you, I'm am here to tell you IT ISN'T. It is barely any work at all, but if you're still stubborn, or maybe numbers just aren't your thing, I will continue to try and post as much easily digestible content as I can on here for quick and easy research.
All these formulas are from scratch, meaning I calculate them from the same raw data that the big boys do (Savant/Fangraphs), however I do not scrape them directly from their sites. Because of this, when comparing, you may notice a small difference in calculation results. I promise, the math is good, there is probably just a minor variable that I decided to add/remove (or a data factor is not publicly available and I haven't been able to recreate it yet). This is not uncommon for statistics, but if it bothers you, then I'd suggest ignoring the purple columns and looking for that data on Savant/Fangraphs. In the end, we will end up in the same place on a player, maybe 1-2% off in some places, but feel like its something I should be upfront about if I'm going to be sharing them with you guys.
Anyway, thats it. Thats the tweet. Hopefully it helps.
