I have been a part of "labs" like this in academia and industry, where the goal is always the next paper above all else, with little care for novelty or impact. Similar to Agile, in the current culture folks are incentivized to abuse the metrics instead of providing value.

How can a professor publish a paper multiple papers per week? It seems impossible that he is really contributing scientifically to these studies. The incredible case of hyperprolific author Mark Griffiths has been discussed before.

We can't get through security at LAX because of a faulty/locked door, and the line to get in is now out of sight. Any flight home I'm on is now officially cursed.

@briamgilbert and @karenyhan have created a comedic summary of the US healthcare system that's better than any educational resource I've ever seen. An absolute must-watch if you can stomach the pain long enough to laugh. youtu.be/-wpHszfnJns

@clouseplant We did, and there wasn't much they could do but book us further out at a nearby airport (Cincinnati). Best of luck with your travels!

@AustinGilliam7 When you finally got off the plane, did you go wait in a huge line at the AA service desk?

Today I learned about flight crew timeouts... Our 9pm 8/21 DFW -> CMH flight is now a 1pm 8/22 flight, and we've been refused accommodations due to "weather". All nearby hotels are full, and it seems everything shuts down in DFW around 8-9pm. This is why we need better trains...

One thing I've really missed lately, particularly with the push towards flexible workspaces, is the disappearance of the "little libraries" from our working spaces, and the knowledge share facilitated by lending out books/notes and talking about them.

Today is an excellent day to make sure your voter registration is up-to-date. Voting isn't all of what we can do to make change, but it's a powerful start. Make your plan to vote now, research what and who is on the ballot, and help others do the same.

Some thoughts on what makes for good collaboration, after back-to-back #Starfinder games this past weekend and a few weeks back in the office. bit.ly/3ujg9Vw

design patterns or city/regional planning. I enjoyed the natural parallels with software -- sometimes the best patterns "hide" their effectiveness until the long-term, as the results are often counterintuitive (e.g. induced demand) and require further analysis to prove. (2/2)

After struggling to get through several other nonfiction books, I finally plowed through "Walkable City" by Jeff Speck in a week. Admittedly, some of my motivation was that it was overdue from @cbus_eric's library, but I'm glad I dove in. Highly recommend if you care about (1/2)

oh you think [popular concept, politically fraught, nonetheless true in 99.99 percent of cases]? well i guess you’ve never heard of [extreme outlier, disproves nothing, spoken in jargon, and possibly not even real].

The phone call with the man who missed his ride is heart-wrenching. If you've ever been unsure of where you'll be sleeping one night, you understand. What's often missed, but highlighted here, is that the humanity of the people on the front lines makes all the difference.

Listened to the first 3 episodes of the new According to Need series by @katiemingle on @99piorg today. I cannot recommend it enough. There are parallels to many needs-based programs I've interacted with, in particular the VA. A stark reminder that we aren't doing enough.

When folks have their name on 10000 papers and their voice in ≈ 0, they aren’t really active researchers and we should stop calling this success.
