Querying authors, may I offer a bit of advice... When including a sample chapter, ALWAYS start with Chapter One. Don't randomly pick a chapter. We won't understand what's happening. More importantly, we really want to see how you introduce the story, characters & setting.

So what I am piecing together about the new #BarnesAndNoble policy is that they are trying to model themselves after indies, so they are only doing nationwide buying of a few books and letting individual store managers build each stores’ collection.

This myopic and regressive decision by #BarnesAndNoble is crushing to debut, mid-list, BIPOC, and so many authors. And if this Penguin Random House/Simon & Schuster merger happens on top of that — on top of the fascist book banning movement — it will be career-ending for so many.

I don’t know if I’ve cried more. This directly effects me. It will/has impacted sales. Because my book isn’t “the” book of the season, it means u won’t find it in *that* store and grab it off the shelf. My Black voice isn’t worthy enough. I’ve waited 10yrs for a slap in the face.

Barnes & Noble is withholding initial support of debut hardcovers til they find evidence it's worth stocking in their stores. They'll be focusing on guaranteed sales from paperbacks. A middle finger to debut authors esp if they're midlist & marginalized. Get mad, y'all. 1/?
