Nicotine pouches and vapes, products designed to hook young people, are being sold just steps away from our schools. Every child deserves to walk to school without being exposed to products that threaten their health and future. #PassTobaccoControlBillKE

Tobacco companies have no place in public health policy making. This @rapplerdotcom op-ed shows how the industry heavily influences health policy in the Philippines, even though the country signed the WHO FCTC, a global health treaty developed by governments that clearly tells policymakers and officials to keep the industry at arm’s length. Examples of tobacco industry interference mentioned in the article include a vape law that lowered the purchase age from 21 to 18 and shifted regulatory oversight from the Food and Drug Administration to the Department of Trade and Industry. The article also flags “corporate social responsibility” where tobacco companies donate to public projects or agencies to whitewash their harmful business and build political goodwill. The piece also details tax lobbying and pricing tactics that weaken health taxes.

🚭 In Kenya, 7.6% of adults smoke Tobacco & ENDS/pouches/vapes among youth rose from 5.6% in 2022 to ~7.3% recently. Tobacco & new nicotine products kill thousands yearly & cost 🇰🇪 billions in health care. Stronger regulation & awareness are urgent. #TobaccoControl @nta_kenya

Why is Tax a Feminist Issue❓ 💰 Tax determines how states raise and spend resources – shaping who benefits and who is excluded. 👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏼 Unjust tax systems often deepen gender inequalities, placing heavier burdens on women and marginalized groups. 🛠️ Women’s labor, especially unpaid care work, is often invisible in tax policies. ⚖️ Feminist tax justice calls for systems that are redistributive and reparative. 🌍 Fair and just taxation is key to advancing #GenderEquality, rights, and #EconomicJustice for all. #Femonomics #AFMARegional

24% of Kenyan youth aged 15–24 have consumed alcohol — and exposure to alcohol ads is a major factor. At this age, the brain is still developing, making young people more vulnerable to addiction and severe health risks later in life. #AlcoholPolicyKE #TheLastWord @ntvkenya

WHO FCTC says: Tax all tobacco products — not just VAT. Higher taxes like excise make cigarettes costly, so fewer start and more quit. This protects youth, cuts tobacco-related diseases, and reduces the health burden on families and government. #TobaccoTaxesSaveslives
