This administration keeps finding new ways to punish the very people who strengthen America. Forcing green card applicants to leave the country to apply is bureaucratic cruelty dressed up as policy. It rips apart families, drives talented skilled immigrants out of the U.S., and tells the world’s best minds they’re no longer welcome here. At the exact moment America is competing globally for AI leadership and high-skilled talent, this White House is sabotaging America’s own advantage. Other countries are rolling out the red carpet for skilled immigrants while America building walls of paperwork, uncertainty, and fear. A nation that attacks legal immigration is a nation choosing decline.
Andrew Ng@AndrewYNg

The new White House policy requiring green card applicants to apply from outside the US is a capricious attack on legal immigration. It will hurt families, leave us with fewer doctors, teachers and scientists, and hurt American competitiveness in AI.

The correct argument is that “we tried bringing only the best in, and they ended up in executive positions, fired Americans, hired H1Bs, and anchored hundreds of thousands of their co-ethnics who *weren’t* the best, gave them preferential hiring, and contributed to the demoralization of the American student.

The Trump administration knows it’s not feasible to apply for a green card from one’s home country. Which is to say that this is, in effect, a policy to kick out immigrants, even the best and most deserving ones.
Homeland Security@DHSgov

An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.

@tomaskenn Yes, exactly. You’re getting it. The red tape is the point. The friction is the point. The leviathan finally favoring American citizens is the point.

Let’s say a U.S. citizen marries an immigrant and they apply for a marriage petition to adjust the immigration status of the spouse. That person would have to leave the country under this new dumb rule. This is going to affect a lot of people negatively. washingtonpost.com/immigration/20…

Because they’re racist! Liberals use racist to refer to people who say true things. They’ve destroyed the power of the world. But people who would destroy the future of the country because they don’t like other races around qualify. This is what you should use the term for.

I understand why we don’t want people to come to the US to be criminals, mooch on welfare, open learing centers and otherwise undermine the country. But I don’t understand why we make it harder for motivated, ambitious, hardworking people to come to the land of opportunity.

This is crazy Most green card applicants have already spent 5-10+ years studying in the US, working in a US company, and building their entire life in the US Why force them to leave to apply?
USCIS@USCIS

USCIS is applying long-standing law and prior court decisions to require certain aliens with temporary visas who decide they want to permanently reside in the U.S. to return to their home countries to apply for permanent visas through the @StateDept. We're returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nation’s immigration system properly. Here’s what you should know: uscis.gov/newsroom/news-…

They should make legal immigration easier for top talent. And make illegal immigration much harder. This current config is not good and hurts the US.
