One of my biggest hurdles in the private training space is managing players’ throwing with me while also trying to figure out what their club coach will have them do. And unfortunately most pitchers are not handled properly. Too many pitches and too many games in 1 weekend. Constant super high to super low workload changes. After years of frustration watching kids being misused I have decided to do something about it. This spring we are planning to start our first travel baseball team. It will be a 14U team with players finishing their 8th grade year. This isn’t going to be your standard travel team that plays as many games as possible, never practicing or training. The core of this team is going to be development. Specifically, developing a foundation for kids as they prepare for high school. This will include building proper throwing programs and progressions, improving athleticism, pre and post throw routines, learning foundational movement patterns in the weight room. In addition to the physical characteristics we want to build the mental side. I recently listen to Tom Brady talk about today’s college football players and I think it applies to all sports. Players are more physically developed and have access to more technology than ever before. While they are nourished physically, they are malnourished mentally. We are in this for long game. Not for how many trophies we can win at 14. Things that will be different about us: - Pitchers will never throw back to back days. - Pitch counts will be based on their workload and preparedness leading up to that game. - We won’t call pitches. Because we care about playing the long game, we want to develop players baseball IQ and understand how to work with their catcher. - 1-2 tournaments/month - 2-3 practices a week These are just a few that come to mind. We are planning to partner with a well known bat and glove company that will be supplying custom bats and gloves for our guys. I’ll announce who it is when it is official. Because this is a team, we need position players too ha! We are looking forward to developing all players and preparing them for the next level of baseball.
