Everyone says “Hitting is 90% mental.” But then nobody actually shows hitters how to train the 90%. They just say things like: • “Stay confident” • “Have a short memory” • “Don’t overthink it” That’s not a system. Over the last decade I’ve worked with 1,000+ hitters, interviewed hundreds of hitting coaches, and coached in professional baseball. And one thing became very clear: Most hitters spend years training their swing… …but almost no time training the mind that controls the swing when things get hard. What happens when: • you start the season 2-for-20 • you swing and miss at a pitch you should crush • you take a strike you should’ve swung at • you strike out with runners on base That’s when the mental side shows up. Hitters start pressing. They start chasing results. Confidence disappears. The best hitters in the world aren’t immune to doubt. They just recover faster. They know how to: • reset after mistakes • stay present within an at-bat • define success the right way • compete pitch-to-pitch even when they’re struggling So I decided to build a course around the part of hitting everyone talks about… …but almost nobody teaches. The Mental Game for Hitters Inside the course: • 5 Chapters • 20+ lessons • Practical mental performance tools hitters can apply immediately Here’s what we cover: Chapter 1 – The Foundation How to build the mental framework that keeps hitters steady through success and failure. Chapter 2 – Understanding the Brain Why your brain works against you during pressure and how to respond instead of panic. Chapter 3 – The Core 6 Principles The mental habits elite hitters use to stay consistent over a full season. Chapter 4 – Defining Success The biggest mistake hitters make with confidence—and how to fix it. Chapter 5 – Mental Performance Techniques Visualization, breathing, routines, and preparation strategies used by elite players. The Mental Game for Hitters is now live. Enrollment will be open for the next 8 days. After that, we’ll close it so everyone who joins can get a great experience and ask questions as they work through the course. We’ll reopen enrollment again in about 6 weeks. If you want to train the mental side of hitting the same way you train your swing: patrickjonesbaseball.com/mental-game

I tell players this all the time: You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. You have to be willing to have short term failure for long term success. What I mean by that is this: Any time you make a change whether it is mechanical, grips, drills, etc. it is going to be uncomfortable at first because you've never done it. You might throw slower, be more wild, or have less feel because it is new. But it doesn't mean it is wrong. That is what I mean by you have to be willing to fail in the short term if it means greater success long term. As a coach it is our job to know what will lead to long term success and to get the player to buy into that. Coaching is an art and a science.

BB% has been roughly the same the last 4 years. It’s 11.6% right now and was 11.3% last year. Velo has been the same since 2021. Average fastball in D1 is 89.5 this year. At the P4 level only though, fastball velocity is 91.4 and walk rate is 10.1% which has been pretty stable the last several years.

Curious — does anyone know the average number of walks per game in D1 baseball this year? Velocity seems higher than ever, but a lot of games also seem to have quite a few walks. I could be wrong. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Can anyone out there recommend a crash course in interpreting pitch shape data? I can read the charts, but struggle to assign goodness or badness to the information I am seeing on them.

@Baseball_Namiki The size of the spine definitely will play a factor! If it hurts his finger he definitely should reduce size. The movement should be good still. If it isn’t than you make need to adjust to a different grip

@PitchingCoachU I suggested adjusting the size of the spike and the way he applies pressure with the middle finger, but it’s a bit of a dilemma because I’m worried that making those adjustments might cause him to lose the movement.
