Today we remember Fusilier Andrew Grundy, murdered by IRA terrorists on 1st May 1992. Andrew was just 22 years old, serving with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. He was from Kings Avenue, Fairhill. In the early hours of that morning, at 2:00am, a 1,000lb terrorist proxy bomb was rolled down the hill towards the Army’s main cross-border checkpoint at Killeen. Andrew bravely raised the alarm, shouting over the checkpoint intercom: “proxy bomb, back gate!” just moments before the explosion. He died from a laceration to the brain caused by the blast. This was the second tragedy to strike his family in just eight months. In 1991, Andrew’s brother Phillip, also 22, was killed in a road crash in Germany while serving with the Scots Dragoon Guards. A young life given in service of his country, taken far too soon.
