Pandemonium as Protesting Contractors Are Dispersed by G¥nsh+ts from Minister of Finance’s Aides There was commotion at the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Monday as protesting local contractors prevented the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, from accessing the ministry complex. The protesters, operating under the banner of the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN), blocked the ministry’s main gate in protest over outstanding debts allegedly owed to them by the federal government. Eyewitnesses said the contractors arrived early and barricaded the entrance, insisting that government officials address their demands before normal activities could resume.  The situation escalated when Uzoka-Anite arrived at the premises and security operatives attempted to clear a pathway for her entry. The demonstrators resisted the move, leading to a tense standoff between protesters and security personnel. During the scuffle, a g¥nsh+t was reportedly heard as security operatives attempted to disperse the crowd, causing panic in the area. It remains unclear if anyone was inj¥red during the incident. Normal operations at the ministry were temporarily disrupted as security agencies worked to restore order. This decision is necessary to avoid a mismatch between our sales proceeds and our crude oil purchase obligations, which are currently denominated in U.S. dollars. To date, our sales of petroleum products in Naira have exceeded the value of Naira-denominated crude we have received. As a result, we must temporarily adjust our sales currency to align with our crude procurement currency. Our attention has also been drawn to reports on the internet claiming that we are stopping loading due to an incident of ticketing fraud. This is malicious falsehood. Our systems are robust and we have had no fraud issues. We remain committed to serving the Nigerian market efficiently and sustainably. As soon as we receive an allocation of Naira-denominated crude cargoes from NNPC, we will promptly resume petroleum product sales in Naira.
