Why are the Oscar-presenter sketches so cringey?

My friend's daughter forgot the word “dandelion” so she described it as “the one that explodes into wishes.” I like that better.

Still thinking about this beautiful interview days later.
Hoover Institution@HooverInst

In December 2025, former US Senator @BenSasse announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. That's the primary topic for this @UncKnowledge conversation about mortality, faith, and what truly matters when time is short. Talking to host @P_M_Robinson, Sasse reflects on "redeeming the time"—holding ambition lightly, loving family more deliberately, and resisting the urge to make politics or professional success the center of life. The discussion also covers Sasse's thoughts on the failures of Congress; the dangers of a fragmented, attention-starved republic; the crisis of higher education; and the moral challenges of technological abundance. He speaks candidly and movingly about regret, forgiveness, prayer, and suffering—arguing that while death is a real enemy, it does not get the final word. Watch the full conversation on X:

the hardest filter in the modern world is the ability to sit with a problem for more than 15 minutes without checking your phone that's it. that's the entire competitive advantage now

@mgmidget In my version, it's an old fashion case of The Emperor's New Clothes. The lighting is essentially overacting in every frame, and nobody said anything. I think it's a production problem. In your version, it's a post-production problem. Either way...

@BAFossey You're version... am guessing you mean the image you posted. Images are fine and they're art they can use any choice of colors one wants I respect that completely. I mean the color choices used in modern "digital film" in movies. It looks so horrible most of the time now.

Movie night. Husband’s pick. My take: Black Bag is easily one of the worst lit movies of all time. Day or night, the lighting choices were either too dark, distracting, or overly diffused. Mood or mess? What am I missing here?

@mgmidget In my version, it’s not a mistake. It’s overwrought, and nobody in the room was brave enough to say, “Um…I think we might be trying too hard…”

@BAFossey YES! Is it possible they made an error with the cinematography and colored the "digital" film incorrectly? It looks terrible. Story and idea were great. I'd like it as a low-budget movie or a play perhaps... with better actors.

i have a theory about God i talk about all the time He knows He can’t reach everyone through the same methods, so He meets you in a way you can understand if you’re naturally funny, He puts you in situations that, in hindsight, are so absurd you can’t help but laugh if you’re analytical, He shows up as patterns. coincidences that line up too cleanly to ignore if you’re emotional, He reaches you through love and loss. through people who break you open and show you what mattered if you’re a skeptic, He lives in the questions that won’t leave you alone God isn’t broadcasting on one frequency and blaming people for not tuning in He’s speaking the language you already understand and if you ever stop long enough to listen, you realize He’s been talking to you the entire time
