English

If PK can end this portal cycle by stuffing Pope in a locker one more time then it would be incredible

@raashaan @LouisvilleMBB You are off to a good start over spending on players and getting injury prone point guards 😂 you won your 1st tournament game in 9 years ☠️ might be able to get another if you spend enough
English

Just because Mark Pope completely overpaid this bunch of mid ass players last year don't try to apply that math to what @LouisvilleMBB is doing this year. That roster was not worth nearly what was paid for it and while UofL is spending more NIL this year than last it's not nearly as much and they're getting great value for their money.

Pat Kelsey has surpassed Mark Pope in every way Imaginable.

@MeManBoy0 “The tournament tape is what turned heads nationally”
What a bunch of bull. He was on everyone’s radar way before that.
The tournament tape was against our back up and 3rd string pg.
You’re just making up context to go along with reading box scores
English

I'll spend the next few hours doing all the known visitors so y'all dont have to DM me....lol
Alex Wilkins is one of the biggest mid major names in this portal class. 6 foot 5 guard out of Furman. Unranked coming out of high school. Went to the Southern Conference and immediately became one of the best freshmen in the country averaging 17.8 points and 4.7 assists in 35 games. Led Furman to the NCAA Tournament as a freshman. That alone tells you something about his competitiveness and feel for the game.
The tournament tape is what turned heads nationally. 21 points and four assists against UConn in the first round. That came two games after dropping 34 on UNC Greensboro in the SoCon semis. Against a UConn defense that gave everyone problems all year he did not flinch. That is the kind of moment that separates guys.
He is elite in ball screen actions which matters a lot for the Kentucky conversation. Pope's zoom offense runs heavily through ball screen creation. Wilkins living in pick and roll at Furman is exactly the skill set that translates. He shot 4.1 free throws per game, gets downhill, and uses his length and patience to finish or draw contact.
Now the cons. The turnover rate needs to come down. The defensive production is a concern. He led the Southern Conference with 98 personal fouls as a freshman guard. Nearly 100 fouls in a season is a real number you cannot hide at the high major level.
The bigger question is the competition level. 17.8 points in the Southern Conference is very different from 17.8 points in the SEC or Big 12. Every elite mid major scorer faces this question when they move up. Some make the leap. Some disappear. Wilkins has the physical tools and the feel for the game to contribute at Kentucky. But Pope is going to need him to defend at a higher level and protect the ball. The upside is real. The proof of concept against high major competition is one tournament game.
This is likely a good value add. He won't be a "starter" but he'll play the same amount of minutes. He's a really solid starter at the SEC level, but he's an elite bench guy. And I think if he comes, he'll be one of those main guys to produce after the first time out. I see a strong fit here if Pope decides it's a good value add. I dont see this as a guy you overpay to get (like Wright or Stokes are)
