Hi Twitter Fam, just wanted to share some updates: I defended my dissertation on Oct. 7, 2022. Then, I became the inaugural postdoctoral scholar of racial equity at UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. I then walked across the stage to *officially* graduate on May 10th.

@roy_schulman I could (foolishly) argue that it’s not inconsistent for me to condemn a politician for lying on a Monday and then condone the same lying on Saturday. Weekdays and weekends are different situations! But most people would consider this inconsistent.

@roy_schulman Apparent inconsistency is probably more accurate. We don’t try to make philosophical claims about what ought to count as inconsistency or not. We consider the descriptive question of why it seems people are so often inconsistent in their moral judgments and behavior

Why are people so inconsistent in their moral behaviors? And in their moral judgments of others? When and why do we excuse others' moral inconsistency? Our review on "Moral Inconsistency" weaves together research on moral licensing, dishonesty, prejudice, hypocrisy, and more.

@roy_schulman It’s a good question. We mostly focus on the kinds of inconsistencies that a dispassionate observer wouldn’t think are justified, e.g. moral licensing, word-deed misalignment

@BA_Helgason that is interesting! how do you differentiate moral inconsistency from relevant changes? for example, I might act in an immoral way toward my neighbor, but not my mother, would that be inconsistent?

Uri Simonsohn, Ioannis Evangelidis and I have been working on a new framework for designing and analyzing studies involving stimulus sampling. I'll be giving a flash talk on this at the JDM preconference at SPSP.

@stephlreeves I've started a reference file for this--every time I do something new that I think I might do again, I paste it into a giant RMarkdown file. Then I can just search that file rather than remembering how/where I did it before. It's been a game changer!
