UK Hip Hop did not grow from MCs alone. DJ 279 built the platform behind the culture. On Friday Night Flavas on Choice FM, he pushed talent from London and across the UK. He promoted shows, backed artists, and gave the scene a national voice. Massive salute to DJ 279.

@workplacennd @djritu1 @CaseyKasemDJ AI was no help... old grey matter worked days & we finally got it! Late '70s: From Musexpo Miami → NYC. Missed TWA, flew Laker to LDN with 1 suitcase in the cabin full of LPs incl. First Choice's Delusions, which has our fave version of Stevie's Love Having You Around! 🎶 ✈️

Big Ted helped build UK Hip Hop before the internet did. In the 90s, he ran the airwaves on Choice FM and KISS FM. He broke records, hosted freestyles, and gave South London a voice. Archives now capture what Big Ted helped build. Massive salute to Big Ted.

1. People don’t realize that it is not only in movies they whitewash or insert a white sympathizing character to sell Black stories. The practice started with music & it is still very much alive today, especially in Latin America. Remember Wakawaka?

African music is having a moment - streaming platforms are taking it global and racking up millions of plays. But many artists say the money isn’t matching the success - and it’s becoming a major talking point. So, why are African creatives earning less on YouTube?

Ty carved his own lane. He blended jazz, soul, and his Nigerian roots into Hip-Hop that felt grown, rich, and real. He earned a Mercury nomination. He worked with Tony Allen. The talent was undeniable. Yet the big platforms stayed quiet. The doors didn’t fully open. RIP Ty

An award-winning Black bookshop is facing a “critical moment” to sell 1,000 books before the end of April so that Black authors ‘don’t lose a platform for their books.’ Afrori Books in Brighton has only four days left to reach its goal. thecommunityreporter.co.uk/p/black-booksh…

Kwame Nkrumah Was Overthrown For Making Africans Too Politically Conscious - Kwesi Pratt Jnr Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt Jr. says the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah was not because he was a dictator, as many were taught. Instead, he argues the real reason was that Nkrumah was making Africans more politically aware and harder to control. He points to a 1961 cable from British High Commissioner A.W. Snelling urging Britain to remove Nkrumah for this reason. He also cites declassified documents from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which contradict the official story and suggest foreign involvement. According to Pratt, even foreign intelligence doubted that the local actors credited with the coup had the ability to carry it out on their own.
