Books and treats made for a SWEET evening at @BCSDKidder on Wednesday night at their Dessert Night Book Swap! Families exchanged books while enjoying hot cocoa and cookies from Travelin Toms. Students discovered new stories as parents engaged in reading time together. Events like these make reading fun for the whole family and help foster lifelong readers. Our students' creativity is MONSTROUS! Yesterday, @BCSDKidder 3rd graders had a blast designing their own monsters, which will then be turned into 3D sculptures by the ceramic students at Strongsville High School. They brainstormed and sketched their ideas, learning that sometimes you have to tweak and revise to get to the final version you want. They focused on the details, considering how their monsters' hands and eyes would look and what materials would cover their bodies, all while keeping in mind how easy it would be to sculpt their designs. Students adjusted and refined their monsters, realizing that you don’t have to get everything perfect on the first try. On Friday, they'll take their rough drafts and start working on the final pieces, picking how they want to add color to their drawings. This project is way more than just an art assignment! It’s all about sticking with it and finding ways to express themselves through art. ✨ Spelling/Phonics Review ✨ Sometimes the simplest activities are the most powerful. Students spin the wheel to land on a spelling pattern we’ve already learned, then write a word that follows that pattern. That’s it. Simple. Focused. Effective. They can use their reference notebooks (filled with all of our anchor charts!) to jog their memory if needed. But here’s the best part… As the year goes on, they need those notebooks less and less. 🙌 That’s when you know the learning is sticking. Not memorizing for a test… but truly understanding patterns. Explicit instruction ➡️ practice ➡️ retrieval ➡️ independence. And they think they’re just playing a game. 😉 @BrunswickCSD @BCSDKidder

Kids these days… are truly AMAZING! When the 2nd graders at @BCSDKidder wanted to connect with a student who has a hearing loss, Mrs. Hardy took the initiative to learn and teach her students American Sign Language. @wkyc recently visited Kidder to report on this inspiring story. The best part is that Mrs. Hardy’s 2nd graders inspired the entire school! Many students expressed interest in learning sign language, so Ms. Kijek (ASL interpreter), Dr. Gibbons (physical therapist), Ms. Jolley (speech-language pathologist), and Ms. Peterson (intervention specialist) started a club to teach sign language and help students improve their skills. What began as a simple gesture of friendship has blossomed into something truly special.
