BC Sports Network

@BCSportsNetwrk

Fan-owned sports radio for BC. A co-op: the fans own it, the hosts are partners, no Toronto boardroom can shut it down. Live, digital, made here. Help shape it.

On July 7th, Rogers shut down Sportsnet 650 and left British Columbia with zero dedicated sports radio. We're building the replacement. And this time, the fans own it. Here's the plan 🧵

@HockeyHugs10 A fully built out platform, yes. Optimistic. A single show pilot is fully doable. The plan is fluid.

@BCSportsNetwrk I feel like 90 days is a bit soon if youre planning to invent an app? Not that I not willing to invest, but it sounds like a taller task.

The tech to build a live sports radio app has been around for years. So why hasn’t this become the replacement for sports radio? Because radio had the listeners, the hosts, the sponsors and the daily habit. Here is what changed in BC, and why this might be the moment to try. 🧵

@CavalryCanuck Totally hear what you are saying but I disagree on the signal quality. You could barely hear it downtown and many communities in the province could not hear it at all.

@BCSportsNetwrk I think this ducks around what made radio work; it’s still there even when you lose cell reception. Even at the best of times, you’ll lose signal driving down highway 1 or 7 during a cross-town commute. The only place 650 ever dropped was the George Massey Tunnel.

This is still a theory. Talent, programming, sponsors and product all have to line up. But 650’s closure changed the starting point. BC may finally be the place to find out if this model can work. Take the survey and join the conversation: bcsportsnetwork.com

BC already has strong podcasts, streams and independent shows. What it doesn't have is one place you can access at any point in the day and hear BC sports talk live. One tap in the car. One tap at work. One tap at the gym. One tap on the seawall.

So true. We think the audience is still there. Maybe not in the same numbers, and definitely not with the same habits, but people still want live company and real conversation at night. The job is to make it easy to find, easy to listen to, and good enough that they come back. Sounds easy enough 😂

not saying it couldn’t work under ideal circumstances, but you used to have to wait all day to hear someone opine on the news of the day. Newspapers arrived the next day. Times have changed. Social, blogs, online newspapers, pods will lessen the impact of that once cherished time slot. Again, not saying it can’t work, but can’t recreate the much simpler landscape of the time

This is what it’s all about! Many of us were raised on the sounds of @DanRussellST coming through the bedside clock radio. Newer generations should have their own version of Dan on late night radio too. Let’s make it happen together!
Memarzadeh@ArashMemarzadeh

late night radio was the format that hooked me into the industry, because of the audience: people working a graveyard shift, fans who can't sleep because their sanity relied on the team in front of them, or folks that just needed a soul to listen to just the best

@brookwardsports @DanRussellST A sports show from 9pm-11pm every weekday extending to 1130pm on game nights/weekends would do very well in this market. Not only live but for the morning listeners. There is a massive void for those who consume sports news in the mornings & don’t want the prior days podcasts.

Still strange to think Canuck radio games will likely be heard on JACK 96.9 or KiSS 104.9 next year. Canuck games on FM? Weird. Then again @DanRussellST SportsTalk ran on Rock 101 for years even though some back then felt the show wouldn't fly on FM. Different era then though.

Just because someone asked: I would think another @DanRussellST type of program from 10-Midnight 'could' generate revenue for a radio satiation, depending on the host. You don't have to have 2 people. Someone could easily fly solo. It's not hard. And it keeps costs down.
Brook Ward@brookwardsports

Serious question. Would love your takes on it. Canucks just lost a radio station which talked Canucks 24/7. How much do you think they are bothered by this?

Sports radio was never just a collection of shows. It was a place. The place you went when a trade broke, after a brutal loss, or when everyone in the province was arguing about the same thing. 🧵
