This H-1B worker has lived in the US for nearly 20 years and built a family here. His mom was dying in India. To visit her, he would need to wait months to book a consular appointment--with the soonest one available likely being scheduled one year out. He made the difficult choice of not visiting his dying mom because leaving without an appointment would mean separation from his children, job, and his other obligations. Much of the commentary around immigration focuses on how such bureaucratic burdens undermine immigrants’ ability to contribute and innovate. But we must remember that this red tape also prevents these people from being fully engaged with their own lives and meaningfully present in the lives of others. This matters too, and these seemingly non-economic problems will eventually translate into economic costs. If America is no longer a place where people feel empowered to be the best versions of themselves as they celebrate, struggle, and grieve, it ceases not just being the land of opportunity, but also the land of dignity and purpose. linkedin.com/posts/gautam-d…

If I’ve seen this before, then I’d forgotten about it, but this is quite literally one of the most straightforwardly disqualifying pieces of writing from a political pundit I’ve ever read. Like, if this is your understanding of the world, then you are such a weird, sheltered, confused person that you should go sit in the mountains for the next 30 years reading about American society and trying to understand it. The idea that anybody who would write this would be employed as a writer and political thinker is completely insane.

Did you know that the amount of money that the LADoT bus system generates from fare collection is - wait for it - the about the same as it costs to enforce that fare collection. They cancel each other out! At that point, buses may as well be free. 🚏🚌 So that’s exactly what I’m going to do. As mayor, I’ll make LADoT buses free as a part of my plan to improve public transit citywide saving money for both Los Angeles and all the people in it. 🌞

There are many, many, MANY highly educated black Americans who are exceptionally competent and extraordinarily skilled in their chosen professions.
However, affirmative action causes people who do not know them well to question whether or not they earned what they have. Given the prevalence of affirmative action in our society, this is actually a fair question.
However, that question is incredibly hurtful to those who HAVE earned it, and the whole system is toxic to society.
The harm affirmative action causes black professionals is one of the least recognized aspects of the debate.
