May 10 is the birthday of Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Matsievskyi, a Ukrainian warrior who became a symbol of unwavering courage and resilience. His last words were, “Slava Ukraini!” Then the russians ruthlessly gunned him down. I do not think the russians who executed this hero realized what they had done. They wrote Oleksandr Matsievskyi’s name into the books of history. By executing this Ukrainian hero, the russians fueled the fire that is already consuming them and will consume them entirely. That fire is the Ukrainian will to fight for freedom and for survival. For Ukrainians, dying with dignity is more important than living as slaves. To die with dignity… to know that your last moment has come and to make the decision to leave with dignity… to go on your own terms… to go with the words on your lips that you chose yourself… to take your last breath, take your time, say “Slava Ukraini!” and die… I used to think that only heroes in movies died like that. Now the whole world knows what dignity is - the true dignity of a real Ukrainian hero. Glory to all who are fighting the russian evil in the form of the russian federation. Glory to Ukraine! 🇺🇦

Pourquoi ma revue, La Règle du Jeu, a décidé de suivre Olivier Nora - «où qu’il aille». La revue fut fondée, en 1990, avec moi, par (entre autres) Salman Rushdie, Jorge Semprún, Mario Vargas Llosa, Amoz Oz, Susan Sontag, György Konrád, Adam Gopnik.

Aux journalistes qui appellent, mise au point. À cet instant, je pense à #Grasset, ma Maison, depuis 54 ans. Aux femmes et hommes qui y travaillent, souvent des amis chers. À mes auteurs. À ma revue, La Règle du Jeu. Et, bien sûr, à #OlivierNora que je suivrai là où il ira.

Vingt-cinq ans qu’Olivier Nora est mon éditeur. Et quel éditeur ! Scrupuleux et enthousiaste. Exigeant et généreux. Comme beaucoup, je n’ai pour lui qu’admiration et gratitude. Et suis sous le choc.
